Wayne State could not overcome three errors and seven walks as the Wildcats suffered a 9-6 loss at Northern State Sunday afternoon to lose two of three games in the Northern Sun Conference baseball series played at Fossum Field in Aberdeen, South Dakota. The 'Cats slip to 26-18 and 22-13 in the league while the host Wolves improved to 13-29 and 9-26 in NSIC play with the win.
Northern State raced out to an early 3-0 lead in the first inning, but WSC got the three runs back in the top of the third to even the score at 3-3.
Nate Cunningham led off the inning with a single and scored on a
Cam Madsen double.
Brayden Chaney singled and crossed home plate on a
Chase Douglas sacrifice fly for the second run while Madsen later scored on a wild pitch.
The 'Cats came up with two more runs in the fifth for a 5-3 lead as Cunningham belted a solo homer to start the inning Chaney singled and later scored when he stole third base and went home on a NSU throwing error.
But Northern State rallied with a three-run sixth inning to grab a 6-5 lead, using two hits and two Wildcat errors to score three runs.
WSC tied the score in the top of the seventh with one run as Cunningham reached on a Wolves error and later scored on a passed ball.
The host Wolves came right back and scored three runs again in the bottom of the seventh to take a 9-6 lead on the Wildcats.
Wayne State appeared to have a rally going in the eighth inning as the 'Cats loaded the bases with no outs to open the frame.
Chase Douglas doubled followed by a walk to
Max Heard.
Taylor Gill's infield single to second base loaded the bases with no one out, but Northern State got out of the jam with a pair of pop ups and a flyout to end the inning as the 'Cats left the bases loaded and no runs on the board.
The Wildcats had one more hit than Northern State in the game 8-7. Cunningham was 2 for 4 with a homer and three runs scored while Chaney was 2 for 3 with a stolen base and two runs scored. Gill also finished with two this for the 'Cats.
Wayne State used five pitchers in the contest. Starter
Carson Obrecht worked three innings.
Josh Kilzer pitched the next 2 1/3 innings followed by 1/3 inning stints from
Adam Eggert and
Kadyn Van Hill. Van Hill (2-1) was tagged with the loss, allowing two hits and two runs. Senior
Eli Crnkovich pitched the final two innings for the 'Cats.
WSC will be at home Tuesday afternoon hosting #4 Minnesota State in an NSIC doubleheader starting at 1:30 p.m.
