#4 Minnesota State handed Wayne State a pair of Northern Sun Conference baseball losses Wednesday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex in Wayne by scores of 4-0 and 18-2. WSC falls to 26-20 overall and 22-15 in league play while the visiting Mavericks improve to 41-5 and 33-4 in NSIC contests.
The opener saw the Wildcats limited to just four hits as the Mavericks recorded a 4-0 win.
MSU scored single runs in the first, second, fourth and sixth innings.
WSC had scoring chances in the fourth and fifth innings but came up empty both times. In the fourth, the 'Cats used a hit batter by
Taylor Gill and
Quinn McCafferty single to put runners on first and second but could not score.
In the fifth,
Nate Cunningham led off the inning with a double to deep center field. With two outs,
Cam Madsen singled to right field but Cunningham was thrown out at home plate trying to score ending another Wildcat threat.
Cunningham's double was the lone extra base hit for WSC in the opener. Madsen, McCafferty and
Brayden Chaney each singled.
Sophomore starter
Kyler Hanson (1-2) was tagged with the pitching loss, charged with four runs (three earned) on eight hits in 5 1/3 innings.
Braden Sweet worked 2/3 of an inning with
Clement Febus pitching the final inning without allowing a hit.
The second game saw the visiting Mavericks score in six of eight innings to take care of the Wildcats 18-2 in eight innings.
Trailing 6-0 entering the bottom of the fifth, Wayne State scored both of their runs as the 'Cats loaded the bases on a pair of walks and
Cam Madsen reaching on a Maverick error.
Taylor Gill's sacrifice fly brought home Madsen with the first run while a
Quinn McCafferty sacrifice fly scored
Chase Douglas (walk) for the second run.
The Mavericks then added three runs in the sixth, one in the seventh and had an eight-run eighth inning to put the game away.
Wayne State had six hits in the game, led by Douglas going 2 for 3 with a double and run scored.
Braden Cannon doubled while
Max Heard,
Casey Prychak and
Ethan Nguyen singled.
WSC used seven pitchers in the contest. Starter
Tyson Romero (1-2) was handed the loss, giving up five runs on five hits in 4 1/3 innings.
The Wildcats will be at home again this weekend hosting Winona State Friday for a doubleheader at noon on Senior Day followed by a Saturday nine-inning contest also starting at 12 p.m. at the Pete Chapman Baseball Complex.
