Mattie Kamery had a match-high 12 kills and recorded her fourth double-double of the season while #17 Wayne State held Minnesota Crookston to a -016 hitting percentage as the Wildcats cruised to a 25-13, 25-13, 25-9 win over the Golden Eagles Friday evening in the NSIC volleyball opener for both teams played at Lysaker Gymnasium in Crookston, Minnesota. WSC is now 7-2 and 1-0 in league play as UMC drops to 6-3 and 0-1 in NSIC action.
The first set was close early as the two teams traded six ties and four lead changes, but Wayne State surged late in the set and posted a 25-13 win.
WSC held a 13-10 lead, then used an
Ella Myler kill, service ace from
Reese Johnson, a UMC attack error and a
Mattie Kamery kill to go in front 17-11 and the 'Cats closed the set strong with a 25-13 win.
Kamery had five kills in the opening set to pace the 'Cats in hitting to go with six digs followed by
Channatee Robles with three kills and five digs.
The second set saw the 'Cats force nine attack errors, holding the Golden Eagles to a .000 hitting percentage, as WSC rolled to another 25-13 set win. The score was tied at 7-7 and with WSC leading 10-9 the 'Cats scored nine of the next 11 points to take control of the set at 19-11.
Kamery had another five kills in the second set for WSC with Robles accounting for three kills and two blocks.
The third set was Wayne State in control again as the 'Cats had 13 kills and a .344 hitting percentage while stuffing Minnesota Crookston's attack at the net forcing 10 errors and a -.081 hitting percentage with WSC posting a 25-9 win to sweep the match.
Robles accounted for four kills in the final set with Myler adding three and sophomore libero
Anna Borner recording six digs.
Wayne State finished the match with a .317 hitting percentage while holding UMC to -.016. The 'Cats held a 40-24 advantage in kills, 61-49 in digs and 6-4 in blocks while also posting three service aces to none by the Golden Eagles.
Kamery led the 'Cats with 12 kills and 13 digs for her fourth double-double of the season. Robles added her fifth double-double of the year with 10 kills and 14 digs in the win. Borner and Robles both had 14 digs for the 'Cats while sophomore setter
Molly Romano was credited with 30 set assists.
Wayne State concludes their NSIC road trip Saturday afternoon with a 3:30 p.m. contest at MSU Moorhead.
