Junior running back
Dawson Forgy ran for 223 yards on 31 carries with two touchdowns and the Wildcat defense held MSU Moorhead quarterback Jack Strand to just 284 yards passing while recording seven sacks as Wayne State held back a second-half comeback by the host Dragons for a 27-17 Northern Sun Conference road football win in Moorhead, Minnesota. WSC is now 2-2 and 2-1 in the NSIC while MSUM is 3-1 and 2-1 in the league.
It was the fifth straight win for the Wildcats over the Dragons while Forgy posted the most rushing yards by a Wildcat dating back to Ryan Ludlow's 252 yards in the 2014 season finale at Sioux Falls.
The 'Cats opened the scoring early in the first quarter thanks to a
Mitchell Andersen interception that gave WSC the ball at the MSUM 25. WSC settled for a
Boston Hensley 34-yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead with 9:27 to play in the opening quarter.
Later in the quarter, WSC drove 52 yards on seven plays with sophomore quarterback
Bennett Dannenbring finding tight end
Dane Petersen on a 12-yard scoring strike putting the 'Cats ahead 10-0 at the 4:11 mark of the quarter.
Following an MSUM punt, Wayne State added one more score to close the opening quarter as Forgy raced 78 yards to the end zone giving WSC a 17-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Wayne State took nearly six minutes off the clock midway through the second quarter for an 81-yard drive with Forgy adding a second score, this time from 14 yards out, giving the 'Cats a 24-0 advantage with 3:08 left before halftime.
MSU Moorhead was able to score right before intermission on a 30-yard field goal making the score 24-3 at halftime.
Neither team scored in the third quarter as the 'Cats were held to just one first down and 23 yards of total offense.
The host Dragons started their fourth quarter rally with a Tyson Brandt three-yard run on the first play of the quarter, cutting the WSC lead to 24-9.
MSUM added another score with 5:22 remaining on a 10-yard pass to cut the Wildcat advantage to 24-17 following a two-point conversion.
But the Wildcat offense was able to mount a ball-controlling drive, using 4:14 on the clock and covering 66 yards to set up a Hensley 26-yard field goal with 1:08 to play to clinch the 27-17 road win over previously unbeaten MSU Moorhead.
Wayne State finished the game with a 384-288 edge in total offense with 266 yards coming on the ground.
Forgy's 223 yards were the eighth-most yards in a single game by a Wildcat running back and the most since Ludlow's 252 yard effort in 2014. Dannenbring completed 16 of 26 passes for 107 yards with one TD. Petersen was the top WSC receiver with five receptions for 46 yards and one score.
Defensively, sophomore linebacker
Jes Krcil had seven tackles with 1.5 sacks for the 'Cats.
