WSC defense, McGill's four TD passes lead Wildcats in 51-6 win over SMSU

            Sophomore quarterback Brady McGill completed 11 of 19 passes for 178 yards and four touchdowns while the Wildcat defense forced six turnovers to power Wayne State in a 51-6 victory over Southwest Minnesota State in Northern Sun Conference South Division football played Saturday afternoon at Bob Cunningham Field in Wayne.  WSC is now 3-2 overall and 1-0 in the NSIC South while SMSU is 1-3 and 0-1 in division play.
            The 'Cats score on three of their first four possessions in the first quarter to grab an early 21-0 lead and never looked back.
            Junior tight end Dane Petersen hauled in an 11-yard scoring strike from McGill for the first Wildcat score at the 10:36 mark of the opening quarter, capping a seven-play 52-yard drive for an early 7-0 lead.
            The next SMSU drive WSC forced a turnover to setup their next score as Kaden Sutton deflected a Mustang pass that was intercepted by Luke Lambert giving WSC the ball at the SMSU 7.  Three plays later McGill tossed a five-yard scoring pass to Dawson Forgy putting the 'Cats in front 14-0 with 8:24 to play in the quarter.
            WSC added one more score in the first as Colton Andrews hauled in a 64-yard pass from McGill giving the 'Cats a 21-0 advantage with 3:39 to play in the quarter.
            The 'Cats closed first quarter scoring with a safety after a bad punt snap from SMSU went through the end zone.
            Early in the second quarter, Forgy hauled in his second TD reception from McGill on a 42-yard screen pass giving the 'Cats a 30-0 lead.
            The next series for SMSU, Wayne State's Clyde Hinton forced a fumble that recovered by the Wildcats' Kaden Sutton who rambled 39 yards to paydirt putting WSC ahead 37-0.
            WSc added one score in the second quarter when Brennan Hayes found the end zone on a two-yard run putting the 'Cats ahead 44-0 at intermission.
            Reserves dominated play in the second half for Wayne State.  SMSU scored the lone points of the third quarter as quarterback Drew Kluender tossed a 15-yard scoring pass to Zander Wolf with 8:26 to play in the quarter to make the score 44-6.
            Wayne State closed the scoring in the final quarter as Jason Jones scored on a eight-yard run to make the final tally 51-6.
            WSC finished the game with 352 yards of total offense while holding the Mustangs to just 58.  The 'Cats had 143 rushing and another 209 passing while holding SMSU to -75 yards while passing for 133.
            Akeem Knox led the Wildcat ground attack with 50 yards on 11 carries followed by Jones with 41 yards on 12 rushes. 
            Throwing the ball, McGill was 11 of 19 for 178 yards and four TD's while senior reserve Dilan Krause hit 4 of 11 attempts for 31 yards.  Keaten Bonderson was the top Wildcat receiver with three catches for 46 yards followed by Colton Andrews with two grabs for a team-high 57 yards and one score.  Forgy had two receptions, both for touchdowns, covering 47 yards.
            Wayne State's defense forced six turnovers and recorded six sacks and 13 tackles for loss.  Sophomore linebacker Jes Krcil had 10 tackles with two sacks, 3.5 tackles for loss and one forced fumble.  Myles Dais had four tackles with Clyde Hinton recording three solo tackles, one sack, two tackles for loss and one forced fumble.  Kaden Sutton added a 39-yard fumble recovery for touchdown. 
            Wayne State hits the road next Saturday for an NSIC South Division contest at Winona State starting at 1 p.m.
