Mattie Kamery combined for 25 kills to lead #21 Wayne State in a 3-0 sweep Friday afternoon over Alabama Huntsville at the Thrasher Volleyball Classic in Nashville, Tennessee. Scores of the match were 25-20, 26-24 and 25-14. The 'Cats are now 2-0 on the season while the Chargers drop to 0-1.
Both teams struggled with serving in the opening set, each recording five service errors. But the 'Cats had three aces and forced seven UAH attack errors in winning the first set 25-20.
The two teams battled back and forth early in the set until WSC took control. Tied at 11-11, WSC used a pair of Charger attack errors, kills from Kamery and Hanel and a service ace by
Reese Johnson to take the lead for good at 16-12.
Channateee Robles had three kills for the 'Cats in the opening set while Johnson produced two aces.
WSC trailed much of the second set, down 15-9 early and 22-20 late, before rallying for a 26-24 victory.
Both teams had 17 kills in the set, but WSC took advantage of five more service errors from Alabama Huntsville. Down 22-20, the 'Cats used two kills each from Hanel and Kamery to grab set point at 24-22. The Chargers battled back for a 24-24 tie, but Kamery had another kill and closed the set with an ace to give the 'Cats a 26-24 win.
Kamery had six kills in the second set with Hanel adding five as WSC posted a stellar .353 hitting percentage.
The third set was close early until WSC surged late and dominated to finish with a 25-14 win.
The 'Cats held a 13-12 lead and was in front 15-13 when scoring six straight points to grab a comfortable 21-13 lead and finish with a 25-14 set win.
Hanel had six kills on seven attacks for a .857 hitting percentage in the third set while Kamery added four kills.
Wayne State finished the match posting a .297 hitting percentage with 40 kills, 10 errors and 101 attacks while the Chargers hit .195 with 38 kills and 16 errors on 113 attacks. WSC had six more digs than UAH, 50-44, and held a 7-3 edge in service aces along with 5-1 in blocks.
Hanel had 13 kills to lead Wayne State, hitting .667 in the win. She also produced a team-high three blocks. Kamery contributed 12 kills in the win to go with a team-high three service aces.
