Wayne State outscored MSU Moorhead 22-2 in the fourth quarter, holding the host Dragons without a basket in the final 10 minutes, to register a 68-51 Northern Sun Conference women's basketball victory Saturday night in Moorhead, Minnesota. It was the first league win away from Rice Auditorium for the Wildcats, now winners of three straight and 9-8 overall to go with a 4-7 league mark. MSUM is now 9-7 and 6-6 in NSIC games.
Trailing 5-0 to open the game, WSC rallied in the first quarter to grab a 13-11 lead as five different Wildcats scored while going 3 for 6 behind the arc to start the game.
It was the
Kylah vanDonkersgoed show in the second quarter for WSC as the senior forward scored 14 of Wayne State's 18 points in the quarter helping the 'Cats build a 31-23 lead at intermission. She was 3 of 5 from the field and made all seven of her free throws to carry WSC in the second quarter.
But the host Dragons came out strong in the third quarter, scoring 12 of the first 14 points to take a 35-33 lead. After WSC regained the lead at 39-37 with 3:58 to go in the quarter, MSU Moorhead closed the quarter with a 49-46 lead outscoring the 'Cats 26-15 in the third quarter.
The fourth quarter would be reversed as WSC saw another scoring surge from vanDonkersgoed in the final stanza along with scoring help from seniors
Meg Rietz and
Tenleigh Smith as the 'Cats held MSU Moorhead to 0-15 shooting the final quarter and outscored the Dragons 22-2 to record a 68-51 win.
WSC made 7 of 9 shots from the field and another 7 of 9 from the free throw line in the decisive fourth quarter. vanDonkersgoed scored another 11 points in the quarter, making all five shots from the field. Rietz was 5 of 6 at the line for her five points while Smith added five points in the final quarter.
vanDonkersgoed ended the game with another career-high performance scoring 33 points on 12 of 18 shooting and a perfect 7 for 7 at the foul line, bettering her previous career-high of 31 points set last Friday vs. Northern State. Smith also hit double figures with 14 while Rietz scored 10.
WSC shot 23 of 49 from the field for 46.9 percent, going 6 of 17 from the 3-point line and 16 for 18 at the free throw line.
For MSU Moorhead, Ashton Safranski scored 13 points with Grace Massaquoi adding 10.
MSU Moorhead shot 27 percent for the game making 17 of 63 shots. The Dragons were 8 of 37 from the 3-point line and 9 of 11 at the line.
Both teams had 36 rebounds in the game. vanDonkersgoed had seven boards with
Rachel Dahlen and Smith each grabbing six. Smith had five assists while
Kelsey Willems recorded three steals. Dahlen added four blocked shots in the win.
WSC was scheduled to play at Minnesota Crookston Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. but for the second time in 24 hours the game was postponed due to bad weather and a blizzard warning in effect for northern Minnesota Sunday. No makeup date has been set at this time.
Wayne State's next scheduled game is Friday, January 23
rd when the 'Cats visit the University of Mary at 5:30 p.m.
