Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Wildcats Unable to Outshoot Marauders in 91-87 Loss

Despite shooting over 50% from behind the arc, the Wildcats were unable to take down the University of Mary Marauders in NSIC action Friday evening in a 91-87 loss on the road. The 'Cats move to 9-10 and 4-9 in league play while UMary improves to 16-6 and 9-4.
UMary jumped out to an early 10-point lead midway through the first quarter and were able to hang on to that lead after Rachel Dahlen added a layup to close the quarter.
The Wildcats came to life in the second quarter, cutting the lead down to seven points twice before the Marauders extended the lead back to double digits with less than four minutes remaining.
A pair of triples from freshman Cassie Allen and senior Kylah vanDonkersgoed made it 38-32 UMary but it opened the door for the 'Cats. vanDonkersgoed would convert on an and-1 foul shot and Tenleigh Smith added a pair of free throws to go down just two points before vanDonkersgoed scored her 11th point of the quarter to tie it up.
UMary made nine baskets in the third quarter including five three pointers but the Wildcats were able to keep it within single digits as they connected on 10 free throws and a pair of threes. Sammie Allen made a layup to cut the UMary lead to two before a handful of Bergen Kinnebrew buckets ended the quarter in favor of the Marauders, 64-59 heading into the fourth.
UMary built a 12-point lead with less than four and a half minutes remaining. WSC would go on a 10-2 run to make it 87-85 with 28 seconds remaining. Wayne State would have to foul and UMary made enough free throws to edge out the 'Cats and take the win 91-87.
vanDonkersgoed led with a game high 29-points and pulled down six rebounds. Sophomore Addy Johnson would score a career-high 15 points on 5-8 shooting with four triples. Tenleigh Smith followed up with 23 points, also a career high and nine rebounds.
Wayne State would shoot the second best three-point percentage of the season, 52.9% as they hit 9-17 threes, four from Johnson and two from Kelsey Willems and vanDonkersgoed.
UMary held the rebounding advantage, pulling down 40 over WSC's 32. The Wildcats scored 15 points off of the Marauders 16 turnovers.

The Wildcats conclude their North Dakota NSIC road trip on Saturday afternoon with a 3:30 p.m. contest at Minot State.
