Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

'Cats snap seven-game losing skid thanks to career-high 31 from vanDonkersgoed in 72-61 win over Northern State

Wayne State snapped a seven-game losing streak in women's college basketball Friday evening thanks to senior forward Kylah vanDonkersgoed's career-high 31 points as the Wildcats defeated Northern State 72-61 at Rice Auditorium in Wayne.  The 'Cats are now 7-8 and 2-7 in the league while NSU slips to 8-7 and 3-6 in the NSIC.
Northern State held the lead for much of the opening quarter until a WSC scoring surge gave the 'Cats a lead they would never relinquish the rest of the game.
The Wolves were ahead 13-8 at the 3:54 mark when WSC closed the quarter strong on a 12-2 run taking a 20-15 lead.  Kelsey Willems had five points to pace a balanced attack in the opening quarter followed by Lily Fitzgerald and vanDonkersgoed with four apiece.
Wayne State clamped down on the Wolves in the second quarter, holding NSU to just 2 of 11 shooting, while WSC hit 7 of 13 shots for 53.8 percent as the Wildcats outscored NSU 18-9 to take a 38-24 lead at intermission.  vanDonkersgoed had six points with Rachel Dahlen adding five in the quarter.
The third quarter saw the Wildcats hold several double digit leads early, but Northern State closed the deficit to just three at 45-42 with 3:55 left on the clock in the third quarter.  An Emma Frost 3-pointer gave the 'Cats some breathing room and WSC closed the quarter with a pair of Frost free throws to take a 54-46 lead entering the fourth quarter.  vanDonkersgoed had nine points in the quarter with Frost adding five.
WSC squashed any chance of a Northern State comeback scoring the first seven points of the final quarter to take their biggest lead of the game at 61-46.  Frost opened the quarter with a trey followed by two baskets from vanDonkersgoed.
After NSU got as close as seven at 62-55 with 3:48 to play, the 'Cats scored the next six to push the lead back to 13 and Wayne State ended with a 72-61 win.
vanDonkersgoed ended the game with a career-high 31 points, making 12 of 17 shots from the field and 6 for 8 at the charity stripe.  She bested her previous career-high of 26 against Augustana on November 25th and it's the first 30-point game by a Wildcat player since Lauren Zacharias scored 32 points vs. Upper Iowa on December 18, 2022.
Other Wildcat players in double figures were sophomore reserve guard Emma Frost with 13 and senior forward Rachel Dahlen adding 10.
Wayne State shot 47.1 percent from the field making 24 of 51 shots.  The 'Cats were 4 of 14 behind the arc and 20 of 25 at the free throw line.
For Northern State, Izzy Moore scored 21 points to go with 11 rebounds.  Megan Counts added 18 points with 12 from Taylor Tool.
NSU was 20 of 55 from the field for 36.4 percent, including 10 of 31 from the 3-point line.  The Wolves hit 11 of 15 free throws.
WSC held a 34-33 edge in rebounding over NSU with Tenleigh Smith and Dahlen each hauling in five boards for the 'Cats.  Tenleigh Smith handed out a career-high nine assists while Dahlen had two blocked shots.
Wayne State is at home again Saturday hosting the University of Jamestown at 5:30 p.m.
