Wayne State held Jamestown to just 25.8 percent shooting and senior forward
Kylah vanDonkersgoed capped a strong weekend with a double-double leading the Wildcats to a 55-48 NSIC women's basketball win Saturday evening over the Jimmies at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. WSC sweeps the weekend and improves to 8-8 on the season and 3-7 in the NSIC while UJ drops to 4-10 and 2-8 in league play.
Both teams struggled shooting the basketball throughout the game, evident by how both teams started the game. WSC made just 3 of 20 shots while Jamestown made just 2 of 14 with the Wildcats holding a 9-6 lead after 10 minutes.
Wayne State continued to hold the lead in the second quarter, building a six-point lead early in the quarter at 12-6. The Jimmies got within one at 17-16 with 3:11 to play in the quarter.
The 'Cats used a basket and two free throws from vanDonkersgoed and a layup by
Ella Sharar to go back up five at 23-18 and closed the first half with a 24-22 lead.
Jamestown came out strong in the third quarter, scoring seven of the first nine points to take a 29-26 lead two minutes into the second half. The two teams went back and forth exchanging four ties and five lead changes throughout the quarter.
WSC held a 36-34 lead thanks to a driving layup from vanDonkersgoed with 2:03 to play in the quarter, but the Jimmies closed the quarter outscoring WSC 17-14 and held a slim 39-38 advantage entering the final quarter.
After the two teams traded baskets to open the final stanza, WSC scored the next eight points to grab the lead for good at 48-41. A vanDonkersgoed layup,
Kelsey Willems 3-pointer and three-point play from vanDonkersgoed fueled the scoring run.
Jamestown got as close as three at 51-48 with 1:22 to play, but WSC used a pair of free throws from Willems and
Tenleigh Smith in the final 36 seconds to preserve the 55-48 home court victory.
WSC had two players score double figures, led by vanDonkersgoed with 19 points and 12 rebounds for her second double-double in the last three games. Senior forward
Rachel Dahlen also hit double figures with 13 points.
The Wildcats shot just 26.1 percent from the field making 18 of 68 shots. The 'Cats were 1 of 16 behind the arc and hit 18 of 25 at the charity stripe.
Jamestown was led in scoring by Allie Berns with 20 points. The Jimmies hit just 25.8 percent from the field on 16 of 62 shots, going 6 for 29 from the 3-point line and 10 of 14 at the line.
WSC held a slim 51-48 edge in rebounding as vanDonkersgoed led the 'Cats on the glass with 12 followed by Dahlen with seven.
Meg Rietz had five assists for the "Cats while vanDonkersgoed made five steals.
Wayne State is on the road next weekend traveling to Minnesota Crookston Friday at 7:30 p.m. and MSU Moorhead Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
