The Wayne State College Athletics and Recreation Department announced today the completion of a comprehensive new strategic plan designed to elevate the student-athlete experience, expand facility and scholarship resources, and position Wildcat Athletics as a premier NCAA Division II department.
Grounded in the department's core mission, the plan centers on five foundational pillars:
Academic Excellence,
Student Health & Wellness,
Competitive Success,
Proud Tradition, and
Community Impact. Together, these pillars guide a multi-year roadmap focused on holistic student-athlete development, operational growth, and sustained success within the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) and on the national stage.
"This strategic plan is the direct result of an intentional, collaborative effort across our entire campus community," said
Mike Powicki, Director of Athletics at Wayne State College. "By bringing together the voices and perspectives of our student-athletes, coaches, athletics staff, and campus leadership, we have built a shared vision that truly reflects where we want Wildcat Athletics to go."
To translate its vision into action, the strategic plan is organized around five core objectives. While the full roadmap encompasses an extensive slate of departmental action items, below lists three of the signature priorities under each objective to drive immediate and long-term impact.
Objective #1 - Revenue Generation
Focused on driving sustainable growth in external revenue streams through strategic philanthropy, facility investments, and commercial opportunities.
- Maintaining and Expanding Scholarship Support: Increasing annual scholarship fundraising toward NCAA equivalency goals across all sports.
- Transforming Capital Facilities: Completing fundraising for the Rice Arena Lobby renovation, alongside securing philanthropic support for phased Baseball, Softball, and Beach Volleyball facility enhancements—including artificial turf installations, an indoor hitting and pitching facility, and an indoor beach volleyball practice court.
- Growing Commercial & Game-Day Revenue: Developing comprehensive marketing strategies while expanding revenue through season and single-game ticket sales, athletic camps, corporate partnerships.
Objective #2 - Internal Support, Infrastructure, & Department Operations
Dedicated to fostering a collaborative department culture and operational excellence through strategic staffing, balanced resource allocation, and expanded programmatic infrastructure to enrich the student-athlete experience.
- Investing in Culture & Staffing: Administering transparent department culture surveys to guide internal improvements while executing a comprehensive administrative and coaching staffing plan to support long-term growth.
- Evaluating Future Sport Sponsorship: Maintaining ongoing Title IX compliance through annual reviews and student interest assessments while evaluating the financial feasibility and implementation strategy for adding new NCAA varsity sports.
- Elevating Club Sports Infrastructure: Strengthening operational support through targeted staffing and budget enhancements to fuel the continued growth of WSC's club sports programming.
Objective #3 - Community Engagement, Marketing, & Branding
Aimed at enhancing the Wildcat brand and strengthening community ties through expanded alumni and donor programming, elevated digital and game broadcast visibility, and civic engagement.
Signature priorities include:
- Upgrading Broadcast & Digital Storytelling: Executing a multi-year investment plan to upgrade athletic broadcast streaming production, technology, and staffing alongside refreshed digital promotional content for all programs.
- Reimagining Fan & Youth Engagement: Launching a comprehensive fan engagement platform featuring student rewards, game-day attendance initiatives, and youth programming—such as the Junior Cats program—to grow season, single-game, and group ticket sales.
- Deepening Alumni & Community Connections: Partnering with the Wayne State Foundation to establish an annual calendar of alumni and donor events across all varsity sports while tracking and celebrating student-athlete community service initiatives.
Objective #4 - Academics, Student-Athlete Support, & Professional Development
Committed to holistic student-athlete development by cultivating an environment of academic excellence, personal growth, and career readiness.
- Sustaining Academic Excellence: Cultivating a strong academic culture by partnering closely with the Student Academic Success Center, maintaining structured learning environments, and upholding high standards for team GPAs and student-athlete retention.
- Launching Cohort-Based Career Readiness: Building and annually assessing tailored professional development programming that prepares student-athletes for post-graduate success at every stage of their collegiate journey.
- Enriching the Student-Athlete Experience & Voice: Enhancing signature traditions—such as senior paw gifts, graduation stoles, and training tables—while empowering the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) with an active voice in departmental governance.
Objective #5 - Competitive Success
Designed to establish clear expectations for excellence and achieve sustained success across the NSIC and NCAA Division II by investing in athletic performance development and maintaining championship-caliber facilities.
- Contending for Conference & National Championships: Developing strategic program roadmaps to position all teams at the top of the NSIC standings and in consistent contention for NCAA regional rankings and postseason tournament appearances.
- Expanding Performance & Strength Staffing: Recruiting and retaining premier talent while investing in student-athlete physical development and injury prevention through expanded certified strength and conditioning staffing.
- Advancing the Facility Master Plan: Continuously maintaining and upgrading practice and competition venues to provide safe, championship-caliber environments for varsity athletics, club sports, and intramural programs.
"Ultimately, this plan sets a clear, ambitious pathway for Wildcat Athletics over the next several years," Powicki added. "It challenges us to set high expectations in the classroom, in the community, and in competition, while ensuring we build the resources and infrastructure necessary to support our student-athletes and coaches at a championship level. We are excited to bring this vision to life alongside our alumni, donors, and fans."
