Wildcats open Missouri S&T series with 7-4 win

Freshman righthander Tyler Albert fired six shutout innings while senior second baseman Paul Schuyler had a double, triple and two runs scored to lead Wayne State College past Missouri S&T 7-4 Sunday afternoon in Rolla, Missouri.  The day was supposed to be a doubleheader but poor field conditions forced a three-hour late start and the two teams met in a nine-inning game with the second game of the doubleheader canceled.  WSC improves to 4-1 on the year while it was the season opener for the Miners.
The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when the Wildcats struck first as senior outfielder Cam Madsen singled and scored on a Gabe Monosmith sacrifice fly putting WSC in front 1-0.
WSC grabbed a 2-0 lead in the seventh when Schuyler opened the inning with a triple down the left field line and scored on a Brooks Kneifl single to center field.
The 'Cats added three more runs in the eighth to take a 5-0 advantage, taking advantage of two Miner errors coupled with a walk and hit batter to score three times.  The lone hit in the inning was a one-out single by Brayden ChaneyCasey Prychak walked to open the frame and later scored on a Missouri S&T throwing error.  Chaney later scored on a second Miner error while the third run was the result of a Max Heard sacrifice fly bringing home Schuyler, who was hit by a pitch.
Wayne State scored two more runs in the ninth for a 7-0 lead.  The lone hit of the inning was a Nathan Cunningham double.  Kneifl, Prychak and Chaney each walked with Cunningham scoring on a bases loaded walk to Chaney with Kneifl touching home plate on a wild pitch.
The host Miners avoided the shutout and made the game interesting in the ninth inning producing four runs on four hits.  Senior closer Braden Cannon came on with one out in the ninth in place of reliever Conlin Grady and recorded a fly out and groundout for the final two outs of the game as the 'Cats registered a 7-4 victory.
Missouri S&T held a 12-10 advantage in hits on the Wildcats.  Schuyler finished 2 for 3 with a double, triple and two runs scored for WSC.  Chaney also had two hits, a stolen base and run scored.  Cannon and Cunningham each added doubles for the Wildcats.
Starter Tyler Albert worked six shutout innings to earn the win, now 2-0 on the season.  The Millard South graduate allowed just five hits while fanning six and walking just one batter.  Grady worked the next 2 1/3 innings of relief, charged with six hits and four runs.  Cannon came on in the ninth and recorded the final two outs to preserve the Wildcat win.
