Kennadi Borngrebe fired a two-hit shutout with six strikeouts and went 2 for 3 at the plate with a two-run homer to lead Wayne State past host Washburn 5-0 Friday afternoon at the Washburn Invitational played in Topeka, Kansas. The Wildcats improve to 7-1 on the season with the win while the host Ichabods drop to 14-3.
Wayne State opened the scoring in the second when Borngrebe singled to center field and later scored on a
Leah Chance single for a 1-0 Wildcat lead.
The "Cats added two more runs in the sixth thanks to a two-run homer by Borngrebe to left center field, scoring
Taylor Coleman who singled to start the inning, and Wayne State held a 3-0 lead.
WSC added two insurance runs in the seventh when Chance doubled and scored on Coleman's single to left center and Coleman later scored on a
Haylee Weber double to give the 'Cats their five runs.
While Borngrebe was receiving plenty of run support, she didn't need it because the sophomore right-hander held Washburn hitless until the bottom of the sixth inning. The Ichabods had just two hits the whole game off Borngrebe – both singles – in the sixth and seventh innings.
Wayne State ended the game with 10 hits, led by Borngrebe going 2 for 3 with a homer, single, two RBI and two runs scored. Coleman went 2 for 4 with a double, two RBI and two runs scored while Chance had two hits including a double with an RBI and run scored. Weber also went 2 for 4 at the plate with a double.
In the circle, Borngrebe improved to 4-0 on the season with the win as she fired a two-hit shutout. She struck out six while walking eight batters in the complete-game win.
Wayne State will play two more games Saturday at the Washburn Invitational, battling #17 Central Oklahoma at 10 a.m. and Emporia State in a 2 p.m. contest.
