Box Score Kennadi Borngrebe's run-scoring single with two outs in the bottom of the 10
th inning scored
Leah Chance with the game-winning run as the Wayne State softball team won a thrilling 2-1 extra inning contest over Emporia State Saturday at the Washburn Invitational in Topeka, Kansas. The 'Cats improve to 8-1 with the thrilling win while the Hornets drop to 8-5 with the loss.
The contest was a defensive battle with Emporia State scoring their lone run of the contest in the top of the third.
Wayne State tied the score in the bottom of the fifth when
Jordyn Rochholz walked, stole second base and scored on a single by Chance to make the score 1-1.
The score was tied 1-1 after seven innings and still tied 1-1 after nine innings.
Going to the international tiebreaker placing a runner at second base, WSC did not allow Emporia State to score in the top of the 10
th.
Chance was placed at second for WSC and
Emilee Marth walked followed by a single from
Taylor Coleman that put runners at first and third after Marth was thrown out at second.
Borngrebe then delivered a clutch single up the middle that brought home Chance with the game-winning run and a dramatic 2-1 Wildcat victory.
Wayne State had eight hits in the game to five by Emporia State. Borngrebe finished 3 for 5 while
Reagan Dreibelbis was 2 for 4 with a pair of singles. Chance, Marth and
Haylee Weber also singled with Chance having an RBI.
Not only did Borngrebe deliver the game-winning hit she also threw all 10 innings in the circle to earn the pitching win, now 5-0 on the season. She allowed just one run on five hits with 10 strikeouts and two walks.
Wayne State will play five games next weekend at the NSIC/MIAA Crossover in Shawnee, Kansas starting with games on Friday against Southwest Baptist at 2:30 p.m. and Maryville (Mo.) at 4:45 p.m.
