The Wayne State softball team opened play Friday afternoon at the Washburn Invitational in Topeka, Kansas with a 9-1 five-inning victory over Newman University of Kansas. The 'Cats improved to 6-1 on the young season with the win while the Jets dropped to 3-2.
The Wildcats opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when leadoff batter
Kennadi Borngrebe doubled to right center and scored on an RBI single by sophomore catcher
Reagan Dreibelbis for a 1-0 WSC lead.
Newman tied the score with their lone run of the contest in the top of the fourth at 1-1, but WSC responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame to grab a 4-1 lead.
Leah Chance delivered an RBI double to right center scoring
Jordyn Rochholz with the first run.
Jordyn Klein singled and later scored on a Newman throwing error for the second run while
Emilee Marth had an RBI groundout to bring home Chance with the third run.
Wayne State erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth on three hits to clinch the win on the eight-run rule for the 9-1 victory.
Taylor Coleman opened the inning with a double and scored on a Newman throwing error for the first run.
Dreibelbis then belted a solo homer to right center for the second run.
The 'Cats then got three straight walks to load the bases. Chance reached on a fielder's choice to bring home
Taylor Fritz while Rochholz scored her second run of the contest after advancing on a Jet error. The final came on an RBI single from Marth that scored
Jordyn Klein with the final run.
Wayne State had 10 hits in the win to just three by Newman. Dreibelbis was 2 for 3 with a homer, single and two RBI. Coleman and Borngrebe each went 2 for 3 with a double and run scored. Rochholz and Klein each singled and scored twice while Chance and Marth each singled.

Jadeyn Stahr (stair) picked up the win, now 2-0 on the season. She worked four innings and allowed one run on two hits while Coleman pitched the final inning and gave up one hit while striking out two.
