Game Recap: Baseball |

Schuyler's school record nine RBI powers WSC to sweep of Bemidji State

Senior second baseman Paul Schuyler set a new single game school record with nine RBI Sunday afternoon leading Wayne State in a 19-7 seven-inning NSIC baseball victory over Bemidji State and a sweep of the three-game series.  It was the third straight league sweep for the Wildcats, who have now won 11 straight games improving to 19-9 on the season and 11-4 in the NSIC with Bemidji State dropping to 5-20 and 2-12 in the league.
Bemidji State opened the game with a two-run homer in the top of the first giving the visiting Beavers the early lead.
Wayne State answered with two runs in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI double from Max Heard with Heard later scoring on a stolen base at third and advancing to home on a BSU throwing error.
The 'Cats took the lead for good with a five-run second inning on Nate Cunningham's bases-loaded clearing double to right center and a two-run homer by Paul Schuyler to left field, his first of the season.
After two scoreless innings between the clubs, Wayne State gained control of the game with an eight-run fifth inning.  Schuyler belted a grand slam over the left field wall for his second homer of the day to highlight the high-scoring frame.  Casey Prychak added an RBI double with Gabe Monosmith and Korey Cozad each contributing run-scoring singles.
The 'Cats closed their scoring with four runs in the sixth inning as Schuyler came through with a bases-loaded clearing double down the left field line to score three runs.  Freshman first baseman Joe Dougherty added an RBI double.
Bemidji State came up with five runs in the top of the seventh inning to make the final score 19-7.
Wayne State had 14 hits in the win.  Schuyler was 3 for 4 with nine RBI, two home runs, a double and two runs scored, eclipsing the previous school record of eight RBI set by Joe Wendte on May 3, 2009 at Minnesota Crookston.  Braden Cannon was the only other Wildcat with multi hits going 2 for 3 with a pair of runs scored.
Cunningham doubled, drove in three runs and scored twice.  Heard doubled and touched home plate three times in the win.
Starting pitcher Matthias Tronsdon worked five strong innings to record the pitching win, now 1-1 on the season.  He allowed just two runs on six hits with five strikeouts.  Kadyn Van Hill worked a perfect sixth inning of relief with one strikeout while lefthander Adam Eggert pitched the final inning.
The Wildcats hit the road Tuesday for a mid-week NSIC doubleheader in Sioux Falls against #17/#18 Augustana starting at 3 p.m.
