'Cats drop pair at Winona State

Wayne State dropped an NSIC baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon in frigid Winona, Minnesota falling to Winona State by scores of 8-4 and 10-4.  WSC is now 23-19 on the season and 15-14 in the league while the host Warriors improve to 19-19 and 14-11 in league play.
The opener saw the host Warriors plate four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to snap a 4-4 tie as Winona State posted an 8-4 win.
After Winona State opened the scoring with a run in the first, WSC grabbed a 3-1 lead in the top of the third when senior first baseman Gabe Monosmith blasted a three-run homer to right center field scoring Easton Mains and Cam Madsen, who both singled.
The Warriors answered with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to even the score at 3-3.
WSC regained the lead in the top of the fourth as Paul Schuyler opened the inning with a walk and later scored on a Casey Prychak sacrifice fly for a 4-3 Wildcat advantage.
Winona State responded again with a run to tie the contest at 4-4 and the score stayed that way until the Warriors produced four runs on four hits in the bottom of the sixth to take the 8-4 lead.
The 'Cats were able to get the tying run to the plate in the top of the seventh as Madsen doubled down the left field line with one out.  Monosmith added a two-out single to left while Nate Cunningham was hit by the pitch to load the bases but Paul Schuyler hit into a fielder's choice to end the scoring threat as Winona State registered the 8-4 win.
Madsen led Wayne State's eight-hit attack in the contest going 3 for 4 with a double and run scored.  Monosmith finished 2 for 4 with a homer and three RBI while Mains was 2 for 3 with a pair of singles.
Starting pitcher Kyler Hanson pitched the first five innings, allowing four runs on five hits with four strikeouts and four walks.  Sophomore reliever Brooks Kneifl (1-1) suffered the loss, giving up four runs on four hits in the sixth inning.
The second game saw Winona State score nine runs in the first three innings and cruise to a 10-4 win over the Wildcats to complete the sweep.
WSC started the scoring in the first inning on a Nate Cunningham RBI single bringing home Madsen (single) with the first run of the game.
Winona State scored two in the first and three more in the second to grab a 5-1 lead.  The 'Cats got one run back in the third to make the score 5-2 as Monosmith tripled to right center field and scored on a Cunningham sacrifice fly.
The Warriors put the game out of reach with a four-run third inning, taking a sizeable 9-2 lead scored another run in the fourth for a 10-2 lead.
The 'Cats got single runs in the fifth and eighth innings to close out the scoring.  Max Heard singled and scored on a Braden Cannon RBI single in the fifth while Madsen had a run-scoring single in the eighth to plate Prychak (singled).
Both teams had 12 hits in the game.  Cunningham was 3 for 4 with two RBI.  Monosmith went 2 for 5 with the only extra base hit for WSC, a triple.  Noah Strizek and Madsen each had two singles.
