Junior pitcher
Taylor Coleman fired a no-hitter in the second game to highlight a 9-1 and 14-0 NSIC softball sweep for Wayne State Friday afternoon over the University of Mary at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex. The Wildcats improve to 37-11 and 17-7 in the NSIC while the Marauders slip to 13-33 and 3-21 in league play.
The opener saw the Wildcats break open a close game scoring six runs in the sixth inning for a 9-1 win over Umary.
Junior shortstop
Lillie Timm opened the scoring with a solo homer to center field in the second inning for a 1-0 lead.
WSC went in front 3-0 in the third with two more runs on a sacrifice fly from
Leah Chance scoring
Jordyn Rochholz (singled) and a
Maddie Scobee RBI single bringing home
Emilee Marth (doubled).
Umary scored in the fourth inning to make the game 3-1, then WSC posted six runs in the sixth on five hits while taking advantage of four walks to pick up the 9-1 win. Reagen Dreibelbis belted a two-run homer to left field to start the big inning.
Jordyn Klein added an RBI single with the other runs scoring on bases-loaded walks.
Wayne State had 12 hits in the win, led by Marth and Timm each going 2 for 3. Marth had a pair of doubles while Timm homered and singled. Klein also had two hits with Dreibelbis hit her 10
th homer of the season.
Starter
Kennadi Borngrebe (15-6) earned the win in 4 1/3 innings of work, allowing three hits and one run with six walks and seven strikeouts.
Jadeyn Stahr worked the final 1 2/3 innings and gave up one hit with two strikeouts for her fifth save of the season.
The second game saw Coleman fire Wayne State's second no-hitter of the season and 11
th in program history while the Wildcat bats connected for 14 runs and 16 hits to complete the sweep with a 14-0 win.
WSC scored one in the first and four in the second for an early 5-0 lead.
Leah Chance and Marth each had RBI doubles in the second while Klein and Scobee each had RBI singles.
The 'Cats added three more runs in the third for an 8-0 cushion. Rochholz had a two-run homer over the centerfield wall while
Haylee Weber had a sacrifice fly scoring Dreibelbis.
In the fourth, WSC came up with six runs on four hits to make it a 14-0 score. Big hits in the inning were a two-run pinch hit single from
Jordan Brustuen and a two-run double by Chance.
Coleman then retired Umary in order via strikeouts in the fifth inning to clinch the no-hit win.
Wayne State had 16 hits in the contest. Chance was 4 for 4 with three RBI and two runs scored with a pair of doubles. Scobee had a 3 for 3 game while Rochholz was 2 for 2 with a homer, three RBI and three runs scored. Marth also had a two-hit game going 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored.
In the circle, Coleman improved to 14-4 on the season by working all five innings, striking out 10 batters and walking two in tossing a no-hitter.
Wayne State is back in action on Saturday hosting Minot State in a doubleheader with games at 12 and 2 p.m.
