Wildcat softball splits with Minot State

Wayne State gained a split with Minot State in Northern Sun Conference softball Saturday afternoon in games that were moved indoors to Dr. Ron Holt Field/Wildcat Dome due to rain as the Wildcats captured the opener 3-1 followed by a 3-2 win for Minot State in the second contest.  WSC is now 38-12 and 18-8 in the NSIC while Minot State sits at 29-21 and 14-12 in the league.
The opener saw Wildcat starter Kennadi Borngrebe strike out 10 batters in six innings while sophomore third baseman Maddie Scobee had a go-ahead two-run double in the sixth inning leading WSC to a 3-1 victory.
Wayne State scored first in the bottom of the fourth inning when sophomore second baseman Leah Chance lined a home run over the left field fence putting the 'Cats in front 1-0.
Minot State responded quickly and tied the score with a run in the top of the fifth inning.
WSC then got two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to grab a 3-1 advantage as Chance opened with a walk followed by a single from Emilee Marth putting two runners on base.  Scobee then connected for a two-run double to the gap in left center field scoring Chance and Marth for the 3-1 lead.
Minot State got the tying run to the plate in the seventh when WSC turned to reliever Jadeyn Stahr, who came on and three straight outs to seal the 3-1 win.
Both teams had five hits in the contest.  Marth was 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and one run scored.  Scobee had a two-run double while Chance belted her fourth home run of the season.  Lillie Timm also had a hit for the 'Cats.
Borngrebe (16-6) earned the pitching win working six innings, allowing just five hits and one run with 10 strikeouts and one walk.  Stahr came on in the seventh to notch three consecutive outs and was credited with her sixth save of the season, tying a school record set by Samantha Felt last season.
The second game saw the visiting Beavers rally for two runs in the top of the seventh inning to collect a 3-2 win and a split of the doubleheader.
Minot State opened the scoring in the first with one run, but WSC got single runs in the second and third innings to forge a 2-1 lead.  Reagan Dreibelbis had a solo homer over the center field fence in the second to tie the score at 1-1 and in the third Chance walked and later stole home for a 20-1 Wayne State lead.
The score remained 2-1 until the seventh inning when Minot State used three hits, a walk and hit batter to score a pair of runs and rally for the 3-2 win.
WSC had six hits in the game, led by Jordyn Klein going 3 for 4 (all singles).  Dreibelbis hit her 11th homer of the season while Taylor Coleman and Marth each singled.
Coleman (14-5) suffered the pitching loss, giving up three runs on seven hits in 6 1/3 innings with six strikeouts and three walks.  Stahr worked the final 2/3 innings and allowed one hit with one walk and one strikeout.
The Wildcats close out the NSIC regular season next weekend on the road visiting Northern State Saturday at 12 p.m. and the University of Jamestown Sunday in a 12 p.m. doubleheader.
