Game Recap: Softball |

Borngrebe no-hits Augustana - 'Cats sweep Vikings for first time since 2011

Wayne State softball had its' first no-hitter in nearly a decade Tuesday afternoon as sophomore Kennadi Borngrebe fired a no-hitter in a 9-0 win in the second game of a Northern Sun Conference doubleheader vs. Augustana in on Dr. Ron Holt Field in the Wildcat Dome.  Coupled with a 6-3 win in the opener, it was the first WSC sweep over Augustana in softball since 2011 and snapped a 16-game losing streak to the Vikings dating back to March 22, 2016.  WSC is now 30-8 overall and 10-4 in the NSIC while Augustana drops to 16-19 and 9-5 in league play.
The opener saw Wayne State jump out quickly with a five-run first inning to lead the 'Cats in a 6-3 victory.
Emilee Marth's three-run homer in the first inning propelled the 'Cats to a three-run lead.  Reagan Dreibelbis added an RBI single while Lillie Timm had a sacrifice fly to score the fifth run.
The 'Cats added another run in the second for a 6-1 lead as Leah Chance walked and later scored on a Maddie Scobee double to left center field.
Augustana closed the scoring with solo homers in the sixth and seventh for the final score of 6-3.
WSC had six hits in the win, led by Marth's three-run homer.  Scobee added an RBI double while Jordyn Klein, Chance, Taylor Coleman and Dreibelbis each singled.
Coleman earned the pitching win (11-2) with six strong innings, allowing three runs on three hits with four strikeouts and no walks.  Junior Jadeyn Stahr came on in the seventh and did not allow a hit to post her third save of the season.
The second game saw the 'Cats erupt with a five-run first inning, then it was Borngrebe holding Augustana without a hit to cap the 9-0 win with a no-hitter.
It was Borngrebe also having a big game at the plate as she belted a three-run homer in the first inning along with a  solo shot from Chance to get the 'Cats off and running in the second game.  Coleman also had an RBI single.
WSC then scored four runs in the fourth to make the score 9-0.  Junior shortstop Lillie Timm belted a solo homer to center field for the first run.  Marth had an RBI single to the pitcher with the bases loaded.  Scobee drew a bases loaded walk and Borngrebe had a sacrifice fly to score Marth for the final run.
Borngrebe improved to 11-5 on the season with the no-hitter, the first by a Wildcat since Cassy Miller in 2016 (4/9/16) in a 13-0 win over Minnesota Crookston.  She struck out five batters while allowing five walks in delivering her 11th complete game and fourth shutout of the season.
WSC had nine hits in the win as Chance was 2 for 2 with a homer while Marth was 2 for 3 with a double and two runs scored.  Borngrebe had a homer and four RBI while Timm also hit a long ball for the Wildcats.
The Wildcats hit the road this weekend for NSIC doubleheaders Saturday at #23 Winona State starting at 1 p.m. and Sunday at Minnesota State beginning at 12 p.m.
