#2 Wayne State takes down the #8 ranked St. Cloud State Huskies in three sets on the road this afternoon. WSC took down SCSU 25-19, 25-14, 25-16 while holding the Huskies to .095 hitting percentage. 'Cats improve to 9-1 overall and 2-0 in the league while the Huskies move to 7-3 overall and 1-1 in NSIC play.
The first set was a back-and-forth battle before the Wildcats built a 10-6 lead. Wayne State held a 21-13 lead before St. Cloud scored four straight points to cut the deficit.
Three kills and a service error capped off the first set for the 'Cats, 25-19.
Mia Berg led with 4 kills followed by
Chloe Hanel and
Channatee Robles with three a piece.
Mattie Kamery led with 8 digs in the opening set.
Set two saw five ties and two lead changes. The last lead change came off a Delany Miller killer to make it 7-6 WSC. St. Cloud cut the lead to one at the 14-13 mark before Wayne State would go on a 10-1 to close out set two 25-14. WSC held SCSU to .033 hitting and had six blocks.
Wayne State had 12 kills in the set along with three aces, two from junior setter
Molly Romano. Miller and Robles each put down three kills.
Set three was all about the 'Cats after the 5-5 start to open the final set. WSC used a 9-0 run to get out to a 13-5 lead and forces the Huskies to use both timeouts.
WSC took advantage of 15 SCSU errors and held them to .043 hitting in the final set of the sweep. Miller led the offense for the 'Cats with three kills and finished the match with eight.
Robles and Berg each had eight kills as well as the trio led all attackers. Robles finished with 29 assists along with two aces.
Reese Johnson led with 14 digs for Wayne State.
The 'Cats hit .265 in the match and held the Huskies to .095. Wayne State finished with nine blocks and five aces in the three-set match.
Wayne State will play their first home game of the season Monday evening when the Wildcats host Briar Cliff in a non-conference contest starting at 6 p.m.
