Nebraska-Kearney used three second-half goals to break a scoreless tie at halftime as the Lopers went on to defeat Wayne State College 3-1 in non-conference women's soccer Friday evening at Cunningham Field in Wayne. UNK is now 2-0-1 on the year while WSC drops to 1-2.
The two teams played to a scoreless draw in the opening half with Nebraska-Kearney hold a 7-1 edge in shots on the Wildcats while WSC had two of the three corner kicks in the first half of play.
UNK got on the scoreboard in the 52
nd minute to take a 1-0 lead. The Lopers scored again at the 70:58 mark for a 2-0 advantage and added a third goal near the 83
rd minute for a 3-0 lead.
Wayne State got on the board with less than minutes left in the contest when
Briella Thompsen and a Loper defender were battling for the ball when the Loper defender knocked the ball into the net for an own goal at the 88:14 mark to close the scoring.
Nebraska-Kearney enjoyed a 16-4 edge in shots and 8-1 advantage in shots on goal over the Wildcats. Both teams had three corner kicks while UNK was called for one more foul than WSC 5-4.
Eryn Skoruppa had the lone shot on goal for WSC while
Tyler Donaldson, Thompsen and
Emma Wasilewski each recorded shots in the contest.
Goalkeeper
Alexa Hofstetter played all 90 minutes and allowed three goals while credited with five saves.
The Wildcats will be at home again next weekend to open Northern Sun Conference play hosting MSU Moorhead Friday at 3 p.m. and Minnesota Crookston Sunday in a 1 p.m. contest.
