Mia Berg led a balanced Wildcat attack with 12 kills while senior outside hitter
Channatee Robles recorded her 1,000
th-career kill to pace #2 Wayne State in a 25-20, 25-22, 25-14 win over #25 Central Missouri Friday afternoon at the Colorado Premier Challenge in Denver. WSC moves to 5-0 on the season while the Jennies drop to 2-3.
The first set was a battle between the two nationally ranked clubs, featuring 11 ties and four lead changes. But WSC pulled away late scoring the final three points of the set for a 25-20 opening set win.
Berg was impressive at the net in the opening set with six kills on seven attacks followed by Robles with five kills and
Reese Johnson had a team-high six digs.
The second set was another close battle, but the Wildcats came up with big points late in the set and broke a 21-21 tie on a
Chloe Hanel kill followed by a service ace giving WSC the lead for good and a 25-22 set win.
Hanel and Berg each posted four kills in the second set while sophomore
Mattie Kamery produced three service aces to lead the 'Cats in the second set.
WSC trailed just once in the third and final set, forcing eight attack errors on Central Missouri while posting 15 kills and a .382 hitting percentage, as the Wildcats sealed the sweep with a 25-14 set victory.
Robles had five kills in the set, including her 1,000
th-career kill, along with
Delaney Miller to fuel Wayne State in the set.
Wayne State finished the match with a .336 hitting percentage while holding Central Missouri to .171. The 'Cats held a 46-36 advantage in kills and forced 18 errors in the win. WSC had one more block than Central Missouri, 6-5, and held a 6-3 edge in service aces.
Berg had a match-high 12 kills and hit .611 in the win for Wayne State. Robles added 11 kills to reach the milestone 1,000-kill mark, becoming the 22
nd player in school history to reach the feat. Miller also had 11 kills.
Hanel added eight kills and a team-best four blocks with junior libero
Anna Borner producing 11 digs. Kamery had three of Wayne State's six service aces with Hanel adding two. Junior setter
Molly Romano handed out 40 set assists.
Wayne State will play another match Friday night at the Colorado Premier Challenge facing Regis (Colo.) at 7 p.m. Central Time.
