Wayne State 64 Northern State 42
The Wayne State College women's basketball team shot 69.8 percent in the second half and held Northern State to 32.7 percent from the field in the second half to cruise past the Wolves 64-42. The win makes the Wildcats 6-0 overall and 1-0 in the NSIC and the loss drops the Wolves to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the NSIC. It was also the 200th career win for WSC head coach Chris Kielsmeier.
Wayne State got off to slow start and trailed 12-2 in the first seven minutes. Then, WSC caught fire going on a 13-0 nothing run over a span of six minutes and 40 seconds to take control of the first half grabbing a 20-14 lead. The Wildcats shot 26.1 percent in the first half, but managed to take a 25-19 lead into the break. In the second half Wayne State shot 69.8 percent (16-23) from the field and 50 percent (4-8) from the three point line and outscored the Wolves 39-23 in the second half to pull away for the 62-42 win
The Wildcats also out rebounded the Wolves 38-22. Wayne State shot 47.8 percent from the field, holding Northern State to just 32.7 percent. WSC also outshot NSU in three point percentage at 42.9 percent for Wayne State and 31.3 percent for the Wolves. Northern State did hold the advantage in turnovers committing 15, compared to Wayne State's 19.
Sophomore Ashley Arlen (Cascade, Iowa) had a double-double for the Wildcats with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Sophomore Clare Duwelius added 13 points to go along with two steals. Junior Mara Hjelle rounded out the Wildcats in double figures adding 10 points and seven rebounds.
Northern State was led by sophomore Mikalya Barondeau, the reigning NSIC Player of the Week, who had 12 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore guard Emily Becken added seven points to go along with one steal and assist for Northern State
Wayne State will be at home again Saturday afternoon, hosting the University of Mary on Rice Rowdy “Blackout Day” at Rice Auditorium in Wayne in a Northern Sun Conference matchup at 4:00 p.m.
