Despite producing just six hits in two games, the Wayne State softball team salvaged a split at Minnesota Duluth in Northern Sun Conference play Saturday afternoon as the Wildcats won the first game 2-1 but suffered a 4-0 defeat in the second game. WSC is now 29-14 overall and 12-3 in the NSIC (tied for 3rd) while Minnesota Duluth is 17-19 overall and 8-8 in league play.
In the first game, Hannah Engelkamp was 2 for 3 and drove in both Wildcat runs as WSC edged the Bulldogs 2-1. Both Wildcat runs scored in the second inning and they were unearned. Amber Baird doubled to left field, Amy Sandstrom reached on an error by UMD third baseman Sammie Gardner and then Hannah Engelkamp delivered a two-run single up the middle to give WSC a 2-0 lead. UMD scored its lone run of the game in the bottom of the second when centerfielder Myriam Trepanier hit a solo homer to right center field.
UMD had five hits in the game to four for WSC. Engelkamp led the 'Cats at the plate, going 2 for 3 with a pair of singles and two RBI's. Baird's double and a single by Jennifer Radley were the only other hits for WSC. Sophomore second baseman Blaire Kuhl went 0 for 4 in the game and saw her 22-game hitting streak end.
Katie Goetzinger (21-8) was the winning pitcher for the Wildcats, allowing just one run on five hits in a complete game effort with six strikeouts and no walks.
The second game saw UMD score three unearned runs in the first inning and hold the Wildcats to just two hits in a 4-0 win over Wayne State. A third inning double by Katie Goetzinger and a sixth inning single from Amy Sandstrom were the lone hits for WSC as Minnesota Duluth pitcher Heather Stemper quieted the Wildcat bats, recording 11 fly ball outs while striking out four and walking one in the shutout win.
Amber Baird (8-6) suffered the loss in the circle for the Wildcats, allowing nine hits and four runs (one earned) in six innings of work with four strikeouts and no walks.
Wayne State will be conclude their NSIC road trip with a doubleheader at Bemidji State on Sunday starting at 11:00 a.m.
