Wayne State 2 Bemidji State 1
Wayne State's Macy Hagen scored her first goal as a Wildcat midway through the second half to help the Wildcats defeat NSIC leader Bemidji State 2-1 Saturday afternoon in NSIC women's soccer played at the Wayne State College Soccer Complex. The win makes Wayne State 5-4-4 overall and 1-3-4 in the NSIC and the loss drops the Beavers to 10-2 overall and 7-2 in the NSIC.
The Beavers got on the board first as Ashlee Ellefsen scored her seventh goal of the season on a six yard shot that slipped by the Wildcats goalkeeper to make it 1-0 Bemidji State at the 7:39 mark of the first half. The Wildcats responded exactly 12 minutes later when senior forward Tiffani Kellerman trickled a shot past Bemidji State goalkeeper Samantha Ross to tie the match at 1-1.
Wayne State exchanged blows with the Beavers early in the second half as each team had chances to break the 1-1 standoff. Hagen broke the tie at the 63:09 mark of the second half when she put a shot in from 15 yards out off a corner kick to give Wayne State a 2-1 lead. The Wildcats defense was strong in the closing minutes of the match as WSC allowed only one shot in the closing 10 minutes of play to take the 2-1 victory.
WSC outshot Bemidji State 17-14 in the contest. The Wildcats had nine shots on goal to the Beavers' five. The match was very physical as BSU committed 13 fouls, including a red card on Mallory Lowe late in the second half, to just five on Wayne State.
Wayne State was led offensively by Hagen with four shots on goal, including her first career goal. Kellerman added her first of the season in the win as well. Emily Walker was solid in net once again for Wayne State, turning away four shots on the afternoon and shutting down the Beavers chances on corner kicks with two blocks off crossing passes.
The Wildcats will play their final home game of the season hosting Minnesota Duluth Sunday afternoon at 1:00 p.m. at the WSC Soccer Complex.
