#4 Wayne State College rallied for a 3-1 Northern Sun Conference volleyball victory Saturday afternoon at MSU Moorhead. Scores of the match were 22-25, 25-20, 25-20 and 25-22, making Wayne State 18-2 overall and 8-2 in the Northern Sun Conference while MSU Moorhead drops to 10-9 on the season and 6-5 in league play.
The first set saw MSU Moorhead hit .438 with 14 kills and no errors while WSC had nine attack errors with 18 kills. With the score tied at 22-22, the Dragons used a service and two Wildcat errors to win the first set 25-22. The second set saw MSU Moorhead hold a 20-17 lead, but WSC scored the final eight points of the set to rally for a 25-20 win. The Wildcats forced the Dragons into 14 attack errors in the second set.
WSC used a late scoring surge to win the third set 25-20. With the score tied at 17-17, the 'Cats used a block by Mindy Moody and Shelby Schultz followed by a kill from Schultz to go up 19-17. The 'Cats then used a service error by MSU Moorhead and kills by Schultz and Cori Hobbs to take a 22-18 lead and WSC went on to a 25-20 win as Hobbs produced another kill on set point.
The fourth set saw WSC take control early, grabbing a 10-6 lead. The Wildcats held several five point leads in the set but the Dragons rallied several times within two points, including 24-22, but Tali Fredrickson put down a kill on match point to give WSC a 25-22 win as the Wildcats had 16 kills in the fourth set to finish off the Dragons.
Wayne State outhit MSU Moorhead .195 to .158 in the match and held a 60-53 edge in kills over the Dragons. Both teams had 24 attack errors while MSU Moorhead held a 13.5 to 9 advantage in blocks over the Wildcats.
Senior middle hitter Jennifer Hefner led a balanced hitting attack for WSC with 16 kills to go with a team-high five blocks. Shelby Schultz finished with a career-high 13 kills and a .379 hitting percentage with four blocks followed by Cori Hobbs with 11 kills. Tali Fredrickson had her second straight double-double with 10 kills and 19 digs. Freshman McKenna Reagan notched a team-high 25 digs with Leigh Connot adding 16 and Nicole Brungardt 13. Senior setter Diedra Artz was credited with 55 set assists and 11 digs in the Wildcat victory.
Wayne State returns to the friendly confines of Rice Auditorium for a Tuesday evening Northern Sun Conference match against #14 Minnesota State starting at 7:00 p.m.
