NCAA Division II 2nd-ranked Wayne State College set a new school record with its 16th consecutive victory Saturday afternoon, sweeping Bemidji State in Northern Sun Conference volleyball played at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. Scores of the match were 25-14, 25-18 and 25-17. WSC, breaking the previous school mark of 15 straight wins set last season, improves to 16-0 overall and 7-0 in the NSIC while Bemidji State falls to 8-8 overall and 2-6 in the NSIC.
The first set saw WSC force Bemidji State into 10 attack errors while notching 10 kills and one error for a 25-14 win. The Wildcats jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the second set and never looked back in winning 25-18. Bemidji State fought hard in the third set and had the score tied at 13-13, but the Wildcats scored four straight points to take a 17-13 lead and WSC went on to the 25-17 win to sweep the match.
Wayne State hit .279 for the match with 37 kills and eight attack errors while Bemidji State was limited to a .105 hitting percentage on 35 kills and 23 attack errors. Shelby Schultz led a balanced hitting attack for Wayne State with nine kills followed by Tali Fredrickson with eight kills and 13 digs. Jennifer Hefner accounted for six kills and six blocks. Junior libero Leigh Connot had 14 digs and senior setter Diedra Artz accounted for 30 set assists.
For Bemidji State, Nicole Olson had 12 kills and setter Jessi-Beth McCannell finished with 19 digs and 31 set assists.
Wayne State will be on the road for a pair of NSIC contests at nationally ranked opponents next weekend, visiting 13th-ranked Minnesota State Friday night at 7:00 p.m. and 3rd-ranked Southwest Minnesota State Saturday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
