Junior outside hitter Tali Fredrickson's fourth straight double-double of 16 kills and 17 digs propelled NCAA Division II 3rd-ranked Wayne State in a 3-0 Northern Sun Conference volleyball sweep over Northern State Friday evening at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The Wildcats move to 20-2 overall and 11-2 in the NSIC with the win while Northern State is now 12-10 on the season and 4-9 in league play.
The Wildcats used 16 kills and a .368 hitting percentage to take of the Wolves 25-16 in the first set. The second set saw WSC dodge two set points by Northern State to pull out a 28-26 win. With Northern State serving for set point at 26-25, Jennifer Hefner notched a kill to knot the score at 26-26. The Wildcats then used an attack error by Northern State and a kill by Hefner to finish off Northern State with a 28-26 win in the second set. The third set saw WSC build a 15-5 lead while forcing the Wolves into eight attack errors as the Wildcats completed the sweep with a 25-18 win over the Wolves.
Fredrickson's double-double of 16 kills and 17 digs led Wayne State. It was her 10th double-double of the season. Hefner followed with 14 kills while Lea Hartigan and Shelby Schultz accounted for seven kills apiece. Freshman McKenna Reagan led WSC in digs with 18 while libero Leigh Connot notched 16 digs. Senior setter Diedra Artz was credited with 45 assists and 12 digs.
For Northern State, Jordan Schaffer had 14 kills, Kayla Ysteboe had 17 digs and Megan Gilbraith accounted for 20 assists and 17 digs.
Wayne State will be at home Saturday afternoon hosting the University of Mary in a 4:00 p.m. contest at Rice Auditorium.
