Wayne State College, ranked co-#1 with fellow NSIC member Concordia-St. Paul in this week's AVCA Top 25 Coaches Poll downed regionally ranked St. Cloud State 3-0 Tuesday night in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Junior Mindy Moody led the way for Wayne State in the sweep with a game high 13 kills. The win makes Wayne State 22-2 overall and 13-2 in the NSIC and the loss drops the Huskies to 12-11 overall and 7-8 in the conference.
Wayne State got off to a slow start in the first set falling behind 6-2 early. But Wayne State went on a quick run and took their first lead of the set 8-7 on a block by Moody and Diedra Artz. The Wildcats would build a lead from that point on and managed to hold off several rallies by the Huskies late in the first set to take the 25-23 win in set one.
The Wildcats used two runs of three points in the second set to take the 25-15 win. The Wildcats improved their hitting percentage in game two hitting a game high .381 compared to their first set hitting percentage of .170. Wayne State also managed a game high 17 kills in the second set.
Wayne State used a four point run in the third set to walk away with a 25-18 win. The Wildcats got off to an early 4-0 lead in the set as WSC used two blocks and two kills by Jennifer Hefner to jump out on the Huskies. St. Cloud State managed a three point swing of their own cutting the Wildcats lead to 18-14, but WSC used another three point run to expand the lead to 21-14 and took the third set. The Wildcats had 14 kills in the third set while hitting .286.
Wayne State was led by Moody with 13 kills on the night to go along with three blocks defensively. WSC had a balanced attack after Moody as Jennifer Hefner, Tali Fredrickson, Lea Hartigan and Shelby Schultz each added eight kills. Senior setter Diedra Artz was credited with 37 set assists in the match. Junior Leigh Connot led Wayne State defensively with 16 digs on the night. Hefner added a team high four blocks for Wayne State.
Wayne State will host #1 Concordia-St. Paul in a NSIC/Central Region showdown Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. in Rice Auditorium in Wayne featuring the top two teams in NCAA Division II volleyball.
