Game 1 - UNO 7 #25 Wayne State 2

Game 2 - #25 Wayne State 3 UNO 0

#25 Wayne State College and Nebraska-Omaha split a non conference softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon in the 2010 home opener for the Wildcats at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex.  The visiting Mavericks belted four home runs in the opener to score a 7-2 win while Wayne State came back in the second game with Katie Goetzinger recording a four-hit shutout with 10 strikeouts as the 'Cats salvaged a split with a 3-0 win.

In the first game, UNO scored two runs in the sixth and added three more in the seventh to snap a 2-2 tie as the Mavericks downed the Wildcats 7-2.  WSC opened the scoring in the first inning when Amy Sandstrom singled and scored on Sam Earleywine's groundout to shortstop for a 1-0 lead.  UNO took a 2-1 lead in the fourth when Julia Krecji and Lindsey Slocum each connected on solo homers for the Mavs.  WSC tied the score in the bottom of the fifth when Hannah Engelkamp doubled and scored on Earleywine's single to shortstop.

But UNO took the lead for good in the sixth at 4-2 when Kristin Wellwood hit a two-run homer to center field.  The Mavs added three insurance runs in the seventh when Krejci hit her second homer of the game, a three run shot to center field, making the final score 7-2.

UNO outhit WSC in the first game 10-7.  Aeriell Earleywine was 2 for 3 while Sam Earleywine was 1 for 3 with two RBI's.  Engelkamp doubled while Sandstrom, Blaire Kuhl and Jennifer Radley each singled.

Katie Goetzinger (8-3) suffered the pitching loss, allowing four runs on seven hits over 5 1/3 innings with six strikeouts.  Amber Baird worked the final 1 2/3 innings of relief, yielding three runs on three hits with two strikeouts.

The second game saw Goetzinger come back and struck out 10 batters while throwing a four hit shutout as the Wildcats earned a 3-0 win over the Mavericks.  WSC made the most of its three hits in the game while taking advantage of three UNO errors and four walks by UNO pitching.

WSC opened the scoring in the first with two runs as Amy Sandstrom led off with a single and scored when Sam Earleywine singled to center field.  Blaire Kuhl later singled and scored on an RBI groundout to second base by Aeriell Earleywine to give the 'Cats a 2-0 advantage.

The Wildcats added another run in the fourth inning to close out the scoring as Katie Goetzinger walked with pinch runner Brooke Vollmer later scoring on a fielding error by UNO shortstop Molly Feichtinger to make the score 3-0.  That's all the run support Goetzinger would need as she struck out 10 batters while allowing just four hits in the 3-0 Wildcat win.  Goetzinger improved to 9-3 on the season following the win.

WSC had four hits in the game, singles by Sandstrom, Blaire Kuhl, Sam Earleywine and Kassie Nurton.

Wayne State is now 15-3 on the season and is next scheduled to play at Missouri Western on Wednesday, March 31st at 3:00 p.m.
