AVCA Team Academic Award Release
For the fifth straight year and sixth time in the last eight years, the Wayne State College volleyball team has earned the AVCA (American Volleyball Coaches Association) Team Academic Award for the 2009-10 season. The Wildcats posted a 3.62 team grade point average in the 2009-10 school year to make the prestigious list for the fifth straight season under head coach Scott Kneifl. Wayne State was among 55 schools in NCAA Division II and one of six Northern Sun Conference institutions to receive the honor that was released on Wednesday, July 21.
The award, initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 team cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale. Besides Wayne State, other NSIC schools earning the team academic honor included Concordia-St. Paul, MSU Moorhead, Northern State, Southwest Minnesota State and Winona State.
Wayne State College is an NCAA Division II school located in Wayne, Nebraska and competes in the 14-team Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference. The Wildcats finished the 2009 season with a 29-8 record, advancing to the NCAA Division II National Tournament for the fifth straight season. WSC ended the year ranked 18th in NCAA Division II, the highest ever ranking for a Wildcat volleyball program to end the season.
