The Wayne State College volleyball team, ranked 17th in the AVCA Division II Top 25 Coaches Poll, opened the 2010 season Friday afternoon with a straight set win over Shepherd University of West Virginia at the Rockhurst Volleybll Classic in Kansas City, Missouri. Scores of the match were 25-19, 25-22 and 25-12.
Junior outside hitter Tali Fredrickson (Grand Island Central Catholic) led a balanced hitting attack for the Wildcats finishing with nine kills followed by eight from senior middle hitter Jennifer Hefner (Central City). Senior setter Diedra Artz and senior Lea Hartigan each added five kills in the win. Artz was credited with 26 set assists while junior libero Leigh Connot had a team-high 13 digs and produced two of Wayne State's four service aces in the match.
As a team, WSC hit .354 in the win compared to .154 for Shepherd. The Wildcats had 39 kills and just 10 hitting errors. Wayne State was scheduled to play Urbana of Ohio in a 3:00 p.m. match Friday to conclude play in the first day of the Rockhurst Volleyball Classic.
