Augustana's Mackenzie Trom scored on a penalty kick 1:45 into the second half for the game's lone goal as the Vikings edged Wayne State College 1-0 in Northern Sun Conference women's soccer played Sunday afternoon at the WSC Soccer Complex. The Vikings improve to 5-3 overall and 2-1 in the NSIC with Wayne State dropping to 3-4-1 overall and 0-3 in league play.
The first half was a scoreless battle between Wayne State and Augustana with the Vikings holding a 6-4 edge in shots after the first 45 minutes. Then early in the second half Wayne State fouled Augustana inside the box, resulting in a penalty kick by Mackenzie Trom that went past Wildcat goalkeeper Jessica Stringer 1:45 into the second half for the lone goal of the contest.
The Vikings finished with a 17-10 advantage in shots, including 7-1 in shots on goal. Augustana had five corner kicks to three for WSC while both teams had four fouls. Kelsey Meyer, Christie Johnson, Norma Volkmer and McKenna Adams each had two shots offensively for WSC while freshman goalkeeper Jessica Stringer was credited with six saves while allowing just one goal.
Wayne State will be at home next weekend hosting Upper Iowa Saturday and Winona State Sunday in a pair of 1:00 p.m. Northern Sun Conference contests at the WSC Soccer Complex.
