The Wayne State College women's soccer team opened the 2011 season Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 setback at Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Missouri. The host Bearcats are now 1-1 on the season while WSC is 0-1.
Wayne State opened the scoring late in the first half as Kelsey Meyer found the back of the net with 1:13 to play before intermission, giving the Wildcats a 1-0 lead at halftime. Northwest Missouri State scored two goals in a 10 minute span near the midway point of the second half to take the lead. Kelly Obley scored an unassisted goal 12:20 into the second half to even the score at 1-1, then Tammie Eiberger scored off a corner kick just over 10 minutes later at the 67:22 mark to put the Bearcats in front 2-1.
The Wildcats put pressure on the Bearcats with three shots and two shots on goal in the final seven minutes, but Northwest Missouri State goalkeeper Kelsey Adams came up with a pair of saves to preserve the Bearcats' 2-1 win over Wayne State.
Northwest Missouri State outshot Wayne State 13-8 and held a 10-6 advantage in shots on goal over the Wildcats. The Bearcats had four corner kicks to none for the Wildcats and NWMSU was called for six fouls to four on WSC.
Kelsey Meyer scored Wayne State's goal late in the first half while sophomore Macy Hagen had three of Wayne State's eight shots to lead the Wildcats offensively. Freshman goalkeeper Jessica Stringer made eight saves while allowing two goals in her Wildcat debut between the pipes for Wayne State.
Wayne State will play their home opener Friday at 5:00 p.m. against the College of St. Mary followed by another home match next Sunday afternoon vs. Missouri Western at 2:00 p.m.
