Wayne State 43 Concordia-St. Paul 41
Vontrell Seroyer's lay-in with 1.10 seconds left gave Wayne State College a thrilling 43-41 Northern Sun Conference men's basketball win over Concordia-St. Paul Saturday evening at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The Wildcats are now 5-14 on the season and 4-11 in the NSIC while the visiting Golden Bears fall to 8-11 and 5-10 in league play.
Concordia-St. Paul held the lead the entire first half as the Golden Bears took a 16-7 lead with 11:44 to play in the first half on a Kenny Olafeso layup to force WSC to take a timeout. CU took a 10 point lead at 19-9 with 7:04 left in the half before WSC slowly chipped away at the lead and got within four at halftime at 22-18 on a three point play by Derrell Williams.
WSC scored the first four points of the second half to forge the game's first tie at 22-22 and moments later took their first lead at 25-24 on a Darren Moore free throw with 14:02 left in the game. The 'Cats took their biggest lead of the game at 29-24 on a jumper by Clayfell Harris with 11:09 remaining. But Concordia-St. Paul came back and tied the score at 33-33 on a Kenny Olafeso three pointer with 8:24 to play.
The Wildcats used baskets by Harris and Adol Aluong to push the lead to four at 37-33 with 5:30 remaining. Concordia-St. Paul then scored the next five points and used Brent Barz three point play to take a 38-37 lead with 4:39 to go. After a Clayfell Harris layup put WSC back in front at 39-38 with 3:19 left, Concordia-St. Paul answered with a three pointer by Cole Olstad to take a 41-39 lead with 2:03 remaining. Another Harris layup with 42 seconds to play knotted the score at 41-41. Peter Olafeso missed a three pointer with 21 seconds to play and Vontrell Seroyer made a diving save on the rebound into the Golden Bear bench to give WSC possession.
Wayne State then setup a play with the score tied and Seroyer drove into the lane and banked a shot off the glass with 1.1 seconds to play giving the 'Cats a 43-41 lead. CU inbounded the ball and got a shot off as Brent Barz caught the ball at the top of the key and launched a three pointer that was off the left side of the rim as WSC held on for the thrilling 43-41 victory.
Wildcat senior center Clayfell Harris poured in a season-high 14 points to pace Wayne State in scoring followed by Derrell Williams with 11 points. WSC was 17 of 55 from the field for 30.9 percent, making 1 of 10 three point shots and 8 of 11 charity tosses.
Kenny Olafeso led Concordia-St. Paul with 13 points with Peter Olafeso adding 11. The Golden Bears made 16 of 52 shots from the field for 30.8 percent including 6 of 20 from the three point line. CU was just 3 of 7 at the foul line.
Concordia-St. Paul held a slight rebounding advantage over Wayne State 40-37 as Peter Olafeso hauled in nine rebounds for the Golden Bears while Derrell Williams grabbed nine caroms for WSC. CU had 15 turnovers in the game compared to 11 on Wayne State.
The Wildcats will be on the road next weekend, playing at Southwest Minnesota State Friday night (8:00 p.m.) and Minnesota State Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m.
