University of Mary 4 Wayne State 1
The University of Mary used the wind to their advantage by scoring four first half goals in a 4-1 Northern Sun Conference women's soccer win over Wayne State College Sunday afternoon at the WSC Soccer Complex in Wayne. The Marauders improve to 6-7 overall and 6-5 in the NSIC while the Wildcats fall to 1-12-1 on the season and 1-9-1 in league play.
The Marauders scored 54 seconds into the contest when Arika Westbee blasted a 30 yard shot that hit the bottom of the crossbar and went into the goal for a 1-0 Mary lead. The Marauders scored again near the 8:00 mark as Alex Bachman-Williams found the back of the net from the top of the box for a 2-0 Mary advantage. Mary scored again at the 34:52 mark when Michelle Jones scored on a wind-aided corner kick over Wildcat goalkeeper
Courtney True for a 3-0 Marauder lead and scored again less than five minutes later off an assist from Dayna Domingo for a 4-0 Mary lead at the 39:12 mark.
Wayne State had the wind in the second half and scored at the 68:04 mark as sophomore forward
McKenna Adams notched her sixth goal of the season with an assist from
Makenzie Evans to make the final score 4-1.
Mary held a 14-11 edge in shots over the Wildcats including 8-6 in shots on goal. WSC held a 5-3 edge in corner kicks while Mary was called for eight fouls to just four on the Wildcats.
Adams led WSC offensively with four shots including her sixth goal of the season while
Mallory Hoyt had three shots with two on goal. Freshman goalkeeper
Courtney True allowed four goals while making four saves in a losing effort.
Wayne State will be at home again next weekend hosting Upper Iowa Saturday and Winona State Sunday in a pair of 1 p.m. Northern Sun Conference contests at the WSC Soccer Complex.
