The #15 ranked Wayne State College volleyball team bounced back from two losses earlier this week to sweep Minnesota State 3-0 on Saturday afternoon at Rice Auditorium with scores of the match going 25-9, 25-19 and 25-16. The Wildcats used a balanced offensive attack as no player had more than 11 kills in the contest. WSC head volleyball coach became the all-time wins leader in program history picking up his 215
th career victory to pass Sharon Vanis' 214 wins from 1993-2004. Wayne State is now 13-5 overall this season and 5-4 in the NSIC while Minnesota State falls to 8-8 overall and 4-5 in the league.
The Wildcats fell behind 2-0 in the first set before finishing the set on a 25-7 run to take the first set 25-9. WSC outhit MSU in the first set .536 with 15 kills and no errors on 28 attacks while the Mavericks had eight kills and four errors on 30 attacks for a hitting percentage of .133. The second set was much closer with Wayne State prevailing 25-19 over Minnesota State is the 'Cats once again outhit the Mavericks .225-.000. Wayne State would close the contest out with a 25-16 victory in the third set to complete the sweep of MSU. WSC outhit Minnesota State once again in the third set .476-.065.
Wayne State held advantages over Minnesota State in all statistical categories with edges of .382-.061 in hitting percentage, 41-29 in kills, 37-27 in assists, 4-1 in service aces, 43-36 in digs and 5.0-4.0 in blocks.
Elizabeth Gebhardt led a balanced Wildcat offensive attack with 11 kills on 19 attacks to hit .579 in the matchup.
Alyssa Frauendorfer was second in kills with nine,
Cori Hobbs had seven,
Leisa McClintock had six and
Lexi Malm and
Katie Hughes each posted four kills. McClintock dished out 27 of the team's 37 assists and also had four digs. Hughes led the team in digs with 14 while
Courtney VanGroningen was second with 10. Gebhardt paced the 'Cats in total blocks with three.
Chandra Honebrink was the primary offensive weapon for Minnesota State with 10 kills in the contest while Krista Hassing was second with six kills. Ellie Van De Steeg led MSU with 24 asissts and Haley Fogarty paced the Mavericks with 10 digs.
The #15 Wildcats will be at home again Wednesday evening at 7 p.m., hosting a non-conference contest against Peru State in the eighth annual Pack the House/Black Out Night sponsored by the PED 411 Sport Marketing and Promotions Class at Wayne State College.
