Alyssa Frauendorfer recorded 16 kills and hit .600 for the match to lead the #7 Wayne State College volleyball team to a 3-0 sweep over the University of Sioux Falls Thursday evening in the Northern Sun Conference volleyball opener for both teams played before 1,044 fans at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. The host Wildcats move to 9-0 on the year and 1-0 in the league while the visiting Cougars drop to 7-2 overall and 0-1 in the NSIC.
WSC got off to a quick start in the first set at 5-0 and never trailed in winning 25-13 as the 'Cats hit .333 with 15 kills while holding USF to just seven kills and seven attack errors for a .000 attack percentage. The second set was much of the same as an efficient Wildcat squad had just two attack errors while hitting .343 with 14 kills as the Wildcats rolled to a 25-15 win over the Cougars.
Sioux Falls made things interesting for the Wildcats in the third set. USF held a 19-15 lead before WSC came back to tie the score at 19-19. The Cougars regained the lead and had set point three times but could not finish off the Wildcats. With USF leading 26-25, WSC got a block by
Cori Hobbs and
Lexi Malm followed by kills from Frauendorfer and Hobbs to win the third set 28-26 and finish the sweep.
Wayne State hit .328 for the match with 50 kills and just nine attack errors while USF recorded an attack percentage of .154 with 35 kills and 17 errors. Both teams had 57 digs while USF held a 4-2 edge in blocks over the Wildcats.
Frauendorfer led the Wildcats in hitting with her season-high 16 kills and .600 attack percentage with just one attack error in 25 attempts. Senior
Cori Hobbs finished with 14 kills and added 14 digs for her sixth double-double of the season. Sophomores
Katie Hughes and
Courtney VanGroningen were each credited with 13 digs while sophomore setter
Leisa McClintock handed out 42 set assists.
The Wildcats will be in action again Saturday afternoon visiting #10 Southwest Minnesota State in a Northern Sun Conference contest in Marshall, Minnesota starting at 4 p.m.
