South Dakota 86 Wayne State 69 Brandon Bos poured in a game-high 22 points to lead Division I South Dakota past Wayne State College 86-69 Wednesday evening in men's college basketball played at the Dakota Dome in Vermillion, South Dakota. The win moves the Coyotes to 1-5 on the season while the game was an exhibition contest for Wayne State, who remains 1-3 on the season.
The game featured four ties early on with Wayne State taking its lone lead of the night at 8-6 following a
Patrick Kurth layup with 16:15 to play in the first half.
South Dakota then held the Wildcats scoreless for the next 6:05 and took a 20-8 lead.
With the Coyotes still leading 36-25 at the 5:11 mark, Wayne State made a run at South Dakota and got within five at 43-38 on a
Tyler Nagy 3-pointer with 1:04 remaining before halftime as South Dakota finished the half with a 47-40 lead.
Wayne State scored six of the first seven points to open the second half and got as close as two points at 48-46 on a
Kendall Jacks layup with 18:31 to go in the contest.
The 'Cats were still within three at 52-49 when the Coyotes put together another scoring run to take control of the game. A 14-2 scoring surge by USD made the score 66-51 at the 10 minute mark.
Wayne State got within 10 at 73-63 following a
Kendall Jacks layup at the 5:46 mark but the Coyotes scored the next six points to push the lead back to 16 and USD went on to the 86-69 win.
Senior center
Patrick Kurth paced Wayne State in scoring with 19 points to go with seven rebounds. Other Wildcat players reaching double digits included sophomore
Joel Heesch and freshman
Trae VandeBerg with 11 apiece while freshman forward
Kendall Jacks scored 10.
The Wildcats made 26 of 65 shots from the field for 40 percent, going 4 for 18 behind the 3-point line. WSC was 13 for 14 at the charity stripe for 92.9 percent.
South Dakota's top scorer was Brandon Bos with 22 while Tyler Larson also reached double figures with 18.
The Coyotes shot 48.4 percent from the field on 30 of 62 including 4 of 15 behind the arc. South Dakota was 22 for 26 at the free throw line for 84.6 percent.
Both teams grabbed 36 rebounds in the contest with Kurth leading Wayne State on the glass with seven caroms followed by VandeBerg with five. USD's top rebounder was Larson at eight.
WSC had 15 turnovers in the game to eight by South Dakota. Freshman guard
Tyler Nagy handed out four of Wayne State's 14 assists in the contest.
Wayne State will be in action this weekend playing at the SMSU Thanksgiving Classic in Marshall, Minnesota. The Wildcats face Northern Michigan Friday evening at 6 p.m. and Michigan Tech Saturday in a 4 p.m. contest.
