Michigan Tech 75 Wayne State 56 Wayne State College could not overcome 13 3-pointers from Michigan Tech along with a 32 point performance from Husky guard Ben Stelzer as Michigan Tech defeated the Wildcats 75-56 Saturday afternoon at the SMSU Thanksgiving Classic in Marshall, Minnesota. The Huskies improve to 3-0 on the season while Wayne State falls to 2-4.
The Wildcats never led in the contest as Stelzer hit back-to-back treys to open the game, giving the Huskies an early 6-0 lead 45 seconds into the contest. Stelzer scored 15 of Michigan Tech's first 20 points of the game, giving the Huskies a 20-11 lead at the 14:22 mark of the first half.
WSC used a layup and 3-pointer by freshman
Tyler Nagy to get within four at 20-16 but Michigan Tech scored on their next two possessions to push the advantage back to nine at 25-16.
After WSC trimmed the Michigan Tech lead to 25-21 following a
Jamie Pearson layup and 3-pointer, the Huskies went on a 10-1 run over a span of 3:50 to take a 35-22 lead.
Michigan Tech would enjoy a double digit lead the rest of the game, taking a 43-31 lead at intermission.
WSC got as close as 11 twice in the second half and trailed 60-48 with 8:35 to go before the Huskies put the game out of reach with by scoring nine of the next 10 points for a 69-49 lead at the five minute mark and Michigan Tech coasted to the 75-56 win.
Wayne State had two players in double figures as freshman guard
Tyler Nagy scored a team-high 12 points while sophomore guard
Joel Heesch added 10.
The Wildcats were 22 of 56 from the field for 39.3 percent, including 7 for 22 from the 3-point line. WSC was just 5 of 11 (45.5%) at the free throw line.
Michigan Tech was led by Ben Stelzer with 32 points on 10 of 20 shooting including 7 for 11 behind the arc. Kyle Stankowski contributed 10 points in the win.
The Huskies were 26 of 55 from the field (47.3%) with half of their baskets coming from the 3-point line as Michigan Tech canned 13 of 23 behind the arc. MTU was 10 for 12 at the charity stripe.
Michigan Tech edged Wayne State on the glass 34-33 as Jordan Chartier led the Huskies with seven rebounds while senior center
Patrick Kurth led the Wildcats with six followed by
Jordan Holdsworth with five.
Both teams took care of the basketball as Wayne State had just seven turnovers to three for Michigan Tech.
Kendall Jacks and
Jordan Cornelius led the Wildcats in assists with three apiece.
Wayne State will travel to Brookings, South Dakota Wednesday evening to play Division I South Dakota State in a 7 p.m. non-conference game at Frost Arena.
