Wayne State 3 Missouri Western 2

Becca Kalhorn's two-out single in the bottom of the sixth inning scored Sam O'Brien with the game-winning run as Wayne State College edged Missouri Western 3-2 Saturday afternoon at the Kelly Laas Memorial Softball Invitational at the Husky Dome in St. Cloud, Minnesota.  The Wildcats improve to 2-1 on the young season while Missouri Western falls to 7-6.
Wayne State scored single runs in the first and fifth innings for a 2-0 lead after five.  Missouri Western scored twice in the top of the sixth to knot the score at two, then WSC regained the lead with Kalhorn's clutch hit in the bottom of the sixth to give the Wildcats the win.
Lexie Loos led off the Wildcat first with a single and later scored on a Kelcie Bormann sacrifice fly to center field for a 1-0 WSC advantage.
The fifth inning run for WSC was the result of an Alyssa Schropp triple followed by an RBI groundout from Rachel Shumaker to put the 'Cats in front 2-0.
After the Griffons tied the score at 2-2 in the top of the sixth, WSC came right back in the bottom of the sixth with O'Brien drawing a walk, moving to second on a Megan Hagemann sacrifice bunt.  With two outs, Kalhorn came in to pinch hit for Schropp and produced a single that scored O'Brien with the game-winning run.
Both teams had six hits in the contest.  Loos was 2 for 2 with a run scored.  Schropp had the lone extra base hit with a triple while Kaiti Williams and Kalhorn each singled.
Junior Cassy Miller (1-0) earned the pitching win, throwing a complete game.  She allowed two runs on six hits and fanned nine batters while walking three.
Wayne State will close out play at the Kelly Laas Memorial Invitational on Sunday in St. Cloud with games against Fort Hays State at 8 a.m. and Nebraska-Kearney at 12:30 p.m.
