Wayne State 5 Mercy College (NY) 1 The Wayne State softball team capped a perfect week in Florida by defeating Mercy College of New York 5-1 Thursday afternoon at the National Training Center in Clermont, Florida. WSC finished the week with a perfect 7-0 record and is now 10-2 on the season while Mercy drops to 0-9. Wayne State's first game of the day against Shippensburg (Pa.) was canceled due to overnight rain.

Kelcie Bormann was the story of the game as she fanned 11 Mercy batters after allowing a first inning run as Wayne State made the most of their six hits in the contest to pick up the win.
WSC tied the score in the top of the second at 1-1 when
Becca Kalhorn was hit by a pitch and scored on a
Rachel Shumaker RBI single.
The Wildcats took a 3-1 lead in the fifth when Shumaker tripled and scored on a
Jordan King sacrifice fly for the first run. The second run was
Lexie Loos getting hit by a pitch and scoring on a Kalhorn double.
WSC added two insurance runs in the sixth thanks to two Mercy errors as
Megan Hagemann (error) and
Melanie Alyea (single) scored with two outs when Loos reached on a Mercy fielding error.
Wayne State had six hits in the game to just three for Mercy. Shumaker was 2 for 3 at the plate with a triple and RBI while Kalhorn doubled and had an RBI. Other WSC hits belonged to
Alyssa Schropp,
Jordan King and
Melanie Alyea, each with singles.
Bormann improved to 6-2 on the season with the pitching win, firing a complete game. She whiffed 11 batters in the contest while allowing just three hits and one run with two walks.
Wayne State resumes play on Tuesday, March 17
th when the Wildcats travel to Kearney for a non-conference doubleheader at Nebraska-Kearney starting at 2 p.m.
