Game 1 - Neb.-Kearney 12 Wayne State 3Game 2 - Wayne State 13 Neb.-Kearney 7 Nebraska-Kearney snapped an eight-game Wayne State win streak with a shocking 12-3 win over the Wildcats in the opener of a non-conference softball doubleheader Tuesday afternoon in Kearney, Nebraska with Wayne State salvaging a split of the twinbill with a 13-7 win over the Lopers in the second game. WSC is now 11-3 on the season while UNK sports a 3-16 record following the split.
The first game saw the Lopers pound out 16 hits in a 12-3 win over the Wildcats. WSC had 10 hits in the contest, but also left 10 runners on base with eight in scoring position.
Sophomore
Melanie Alyea led the Wildcats in hitting, going 3 for 3 with a pair of doubles and an RBI. Junior centerfielder
Lexie Loos was 3 for 4 with a run scored while
Sam O'Brien added a double.
Senior
Kelcie Bormann (6-3) saw her five-game win streak snapped in the pitching circle, allowing nine hits and six runs in 3 2/3 innings with two strikeouts. Junior reliever
Sarah Macias worked the final two innings, charged with seven hits and six runs (one earned run).
The second game saw the Wildcats erase an early 4-1 deficit by scoring six runs in the second and four more in the sixth as Wayne State salvaged a split with a 13-7 win over the Lopers.
UNK roughed up Wildcat starter
Sara Scheffert with a four-run first inning on three hits and three Wildcat walks.
But WSC quickly rebounded from the early deficit and scored six runs in the second and two more in the third to take a 9-4 lead.
Big hits in the six-run second inning included junior leftfielder
Shelby Wobken recording a double and RBI single along with a two-run single by
Kaiti Williams and an RBI single from
Jordan King.
Williams produced a two-run single that scored
Lexie Loos and King in the third inning.
WSC took a 13-4 lead in the sixth inning with Wobken delivering a two-run double and
Alyssa Schropp producing a two-run single.
UNK would go away easily, scoring three runs in the bottom of the sixth to make the final score 13-7.
Wayne State had 15 hits in the game, led by Williams going a perfect 5 for 5 with a double, four RBI and two runs scored.
Shelby Wobken was 3 for 4 with two doubles, three RBI and two runs scored while
Jordan King chipped in three hits (3 for 5) with three runs scored. Loos finished 2 for 5 with a double and two runs scored.
Senior
Sara Scheffert (2-0) overcame a slow start to pick up the pitching win. She worked five innings and yielded four runs on three hits with five strikeouts and four walks. Junior
Cassy Miller finished the game pitching the final two innings, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and one strikeout.
Wayne State will play six games this weekend at the Missouri Western Tournament in St. Joseph, Missouri, starting Friday at 12 p.m. against Central Missouri.
