Game 1 - Univ. of Mary 3 Wayne State 2

Game 2 - Wayne State 1 Univ. of Mary 0 (9 inn.)

Wayne State and the University of Mary split a Northern Sun Conference softball doubleheader Sunday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex in Wayne.  The Marauders won the opener 3-2 with WSC winning the second game 1-0 in nine innings.  The Wildcats are now 17-9 and 3-3 in league play with Mary at 12-19 and 1-4 in the NSIC.
Hits were at a premium Sunday as northwest winds of 30-40 mph were blowing into the batter's face.
The first game saw Mary use the most of their five hits while WSC stranded four runners at third base, including the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning as the Marauders held on for a 3-2 win.
WSC had eight hits in the game to five for Mary.  Lexie Loos was 3 for 4 with three singles while Jordan King finished 2 for 4 with a run scored.
Sara Scheffert (3-3) suffered the pitching loss in a complete game effort.  She allowed three runs (two earned) on five hits with five strikeouts and three walks.
The second game saw junior shortstop Sam O'Brien's single score pinch-runner Jalyn Zeiss with the game's only run in the bottom of the ninth inning for a 1-0 Wildcat win to salvage a split.
Mary's best chance at scoring was in the second inning when the Marauders left the bases loaded.  Wayne State left two runners on in the third inning for their best chance to score in regulation.
In the WSC ninth inning, Kaiti Williams singled up the middle.  Pinch-runner Jalyn Zeiss moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Kelcie Bormann, then O'Brien singed to score Zeiss with the lone run of the game for the win.
WSC had six hits with Mary recording five.  Shelby Wobken was 2 for 3 with a double.  Bormann doubled while King, Williams and O'Brien singled.
Bormann pitched the first eight innings for WSC, allowing five hits and no runs with 11 strikeouts and four walks.  Junior reliever Cassy Miller (5-1) worked the ninth inning and struck out two with one walk to get the win.
Wayne State will be at home again Tuesday afternoon hosting Winona State in a 1 p.m. doubleheader.
