Sam O'Brien homered in the top of the seventh inning to tie the game and added a three-run blast to highlight a five-run eighth inning to power Wayne State College in a wild 10-6 8 inning victory over St. Joseph College of Indiana Sunday evening at the National Training Center Spring Games Softball Tournament in Clermont, Florida. WSC moves to 5-2 with the win while St. Joseph is 4-6.
St. Joseph College held a 1-0 lead after three innings, but WSC posted four runs in the top of the fourth inning for a 4-1 advantage. But St. Joseph tied the game with three runs in the fifth inning and took a 5-4 lead with one run in the bottom of the sixth.
O'Brien tied the game to start the top of the seventh with a leadoff homer, sending the game into extra innings.
In the WSC eighth,
Jordan King and
Kaiti Williams each recorded run-scoring singles followed by a three run homer from O'Brien to cap the inning to give the Wildcats a 10-5 lead. St. Joseph plated one run in the bottom of the eighth to make the final score 10-6.
Wayne State had 12 hits in the game while St. Joseph recorded six.
O'Brien was 3 for 5 at the plate with her two home runs to go with four RBI's.
Lexie Loos added three singles while scoring two runs and driving in two.
Kaiti Williams and
Jordan King each went 2 for 5 at the plate with two RBI's while
Alyssa Schropp doubled and
Monique Alyea singled to close out Wayne State's 12 hit attack.
Cassy Miller was the starting pitcher and worked the first five innings, allowing four runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
Kelcie Bormann (3-2) earned the pitching win in relief, striking out five batters while giving up two runs (one earned) on three hits.
Wayne State will face Maryville (Mo.) at 3 p.m. and California (Pa.) at 5 p.m. Monday as the Wildcats continue play at the National Training Center Spring Games in Florida.
