Kaiti Williams became the all-time doubles leader at Wayne State and belted a two-run homer to highlight a 4 for 7 day at the plate to lead the Wildcats in a non-conference softball split against Washburn University. The visiting Ichabods won the opener 7-1 with WSC taking the nightcap 7-5, making the Wildcats 26-16 overall while Washburn is now 25-18.
Wayne State outhit Washburn 6-5 in the opener, but the Ichabods took advantage of four Wildcat walks and several hit batters to score seven runs in a 7-1 win.
Washburn plated two runs in the first and second innings for a 4-0 lead. WSC scored its lone run in the fourth when
Kelcie Bormann walked with pinch runner
Jalyn Zeiss scoring on a Washburn fielding error for the only Wildcat run of the contest.
The Ichabods added a solo run in the sixth and two more in the seventh for a 7-1 win.
Lexie Loos was 2 for 4 at the plate with a pair of doubles to lead Wayne State. Williams also doubled, the 50
th career double which makes her the all-time leader at WSC.
Sam O'Brien,
Jordan King and Melania Alyea each had singles.
Senior
Sara Scheffert (5-5) suffered the pitching loss, going all seven innings and allowing just five hits and seven runs (five earned) with four walks and four strikeouts.
The second game saw Williams go 3 for 3 at the plate with a two-run homer while junior
Cassy Miller pitched a complete game win with eight strikeouts to help the Wildcats gain a split with a 7-5 victory.
Williams' two-run homer in the third opened the WSC scoring.
Megan Hagemann doubled in the fourth and scored on a Washburn error for a 3-0 Wildcat lead after four innings.
Washburn took a short-lived 4-3 lead with four runs in the fifth, but WSC came back and took the lead for good with two runs in the bottom of the fifth for a 5-4 lead thanks to a two-run double by
Melanie Alyea.
WSC pushed the lead to 7-4 in the sixth with a pair of runs as
Jordan King (single) scored on a Ichabod throwing error while
Sam O'Brien added a sacrifice fly that scored Williams (single).
Washburn got a solo homer in the top of the seventh to make the final score 7-5.
Both teams had 10 hits in the contest. Williams was a perfect 3 for 3 with two RBI and two runs scored. O'Brien finished 2 for 2 while King was 2 for 3 with two runs scored. Melania Alyea doubled and had two RBI while Hagemann and Loos each added hits in the Wildcat win.
Miller improved to 8-3 on the season with the complete game win. She allowed 10 hits and five runs (three earned) with eight strikeouts and one walk.
Wayne State will be at home this weekend for Northern Sun Conference doubleheaders against St. Cloud State Saturday at 12 p.m. and Sunday vs. Minnesota Duluth at 12 p.m.
