Wildcats split with UIU in final home softball games of season

Game 1 - Upper Iowa 11 Wayne State 8 (8 inn.)

Game 2 - Wayne State 8 Upper Iowa 0 (5 inn.)

            Wayne State College and Upper Iowa split a Northern Sun Conference softball doubleheader Wednesday afternoon at the Pete Chapman Softball Complex as the Peacocks won an 11-8, 8-inning contest in the opener followed by an 8-0 Wildcat win in the second game that lasted just five innings.  WSC is now 30-18 and 15-11 in the NSIC while UIU is 20-27 and 15-11 in league play.
            The opener saw UIU take a 7-0 lead early, then WSC rallied to tie the game at 7-7 before the Peacocks scored three runs in the top of the eighth to win a wild 11-8 contest.
            WSC scored two runs in the second on back-to-back solo homers by Kelcie Bormann and Sam O'Brien to pull within 7-2.  The 'Cats scored one in the fourth on a Kaiti Williams solo homer and tied the game with four runs in the fifth with RBI singles coming from Alex Schmidt, Jordan King, Williams and Bormann.
            Upper Iowa took an 8-7 lead in the top of the seventh, but WSC came back in the bottom of the seventh and knotted the score again at 8-8 on a Bormann RBI double.  But the Peacocks scored three runs in the top of the eighth to pick up the 11-8 win.
            WSC had 11 hits in the game.  Bormann finished 3 for 3 with a homer, double and three RBI's.  Kaiti Williams ended 3 for 4 with a homer, three runs scored and two RBI.  O'Brien added a solo homer while Alyssa Schropp doubled.  Junior Lexie Loos saw her 18-game hit streak come to an end going 0 for 4 in the contest.
            Junior reliever Cassy Miller (8-4) suffered the pitching loss.  She was charged with four runs (two earned) over six innings with six strikeouts and two walks. 
            The second game saw WSC erupt for seven runs in the first two innings as Bormann fired a four-hit shutout and was 2 for 3 at the plate with a homer to help the Wildcats gain a split with a 8-0 win in five innings.
            Bormann hit a two-out, two-run homer in the first followed by a Melanie Alyea RBI double for a 3-0 WSC lead after one inning.
            A two-run double from Bormann was the key hit in a four-run second inning that gave WSC a 7-0 advantage.
            The score stayed that way until the bottom of the fifth when senior catcher Megan Hagemann blasted a solo homer over the left center field wall giving Wayne State the 8-0 win.
            WSC had 12 hits in the contest to just four by Upper Iowa.  Bormann ended the game 2 for 4 at the plate with a two-run homer and two-run double to lead the 'Cats offensively.  King and Melanie Alyea each went 2 for 3 at the plate while Hagemann homered and Sam O'Brien doubled for other extra base hits by the Wildcats.
            Bormann improved to 16-8 in the circle, firing a complete game four-hit shutout striking out four batters.
            Wayne State will close out the NSIC regular season this weekend on the road, at Concordia-St. Paul Saturday at 12 p.m. and at Minnesota State Sunday at noon.
