Sioux Falls 2 Wayne State 0 Despite 12 strikeouts from senior
Kelcie Bormann, the Wayne State softball season came to an end Friday afternoon at the NSIC Softball Tournament in Sioux Falls, South Dakota with a 2-0 loss to the University of Sioux Falls in an elimination game played at Sherman Park. The Wildcats end the year with a 34-21 record while USF advances to Saturday's play at 32-22.
Wayne State managed just three hits, all singles, off USF pitcher Breanna Black without a strikeout. But Black got WSC batters to hit into 11 groundouts and nine fly outs as the Cougars used single runs in the fourth and sixth innings to pick up the 2-0 win.
The Wildcats' best scoring chance came in the third inning as
Alyssa Schropp singled and
Lexie Loos reached on a fielder's choice, giving WSC runners at second and third with two outs. However, senior
Kaiti Williams lined out to left field to end the lone scoring threat in the contest.
USF got a solo homer from Betsy Thomas in the fourth inning and an RBI single from Alyson Netty in the sixth inning to account for the two Cougar runs.
Sioux Falls held a 7-3 advantage in hits over WSC. Bormann had two of Wayne State's three singles, going 2 for 3 at the plate, while Schropp recorded the remaining WSC hit.
Bormann (19-9) suffered the pitching loss despite firing a complete game with 12 strikeouts. She was charged with seven hits and two runs, both earned, while giving up just one walk.
Wayne State ends the season at 34-21 and has seven seniors on the roster.
