Box Score Wayne State 92 Minot State 81 Wayne State College had six players in double figures and shot a season-high 63.3 percent (31 of 49) from the field to defeat Minot State 92-81 in Northern Sun Conference men's basketball played Saturday evening at Rice Auditorium in Wayne. WSC improves to 5-16 overall and 3-12 in the NSIC while MISU falls to 10-11 and 5-10 in league play.
The Wildcats took an early 12-2 lead on the Beavers less than 4:30 into the contest. WSC pushed the lead to 14 at 28-14 following a
Brian Goodwin jumper with 8:43 to play in the first half.
With WSC holding a 34-24 lead at the 2:57 mark, Minot State closed the half on a 12-5 run and got within three at halftime as the Wildcats took a 39-36 lead into the locker room at intermission.
The two teams traded four lead changes with nine ties early in the second half until WSC pulled away late for the win. Neither team held a lead of more than five points until a key stretch by WSC in the final four minutes that put the game out of reach.
MISU used a pair of Nathan Mertens free throws with 4:53 to play to force the game's ninth and final tie at 70.
WSC took the lead for good on a pair of
Vance Janssen free throws and a Janssen jumper for a 74-70 lead.
Sophomore
Jordan Cornelius later sank back-to-back jumpers to put the 'Cats back up 10 at 82-72 with 1:56 remaining.
The final two minutes of the contest turned into a foul-fest as Minot State never got closer than eight points the rest of the way giving Wayne State the 92-81 win.
Senior forward
David Andersen poured in a career-high 19 points to lead six Wildcat players in double figures. Cornelius followed with 18 while Janssen and Goodwin produced 12 apiece. Sophomore guard
Matt Thomas produced 11 points and
Adam Moon closed out the double digit scorers with 10.
Wayne State shot a season-high 63.3 percent from the field, making 31 of 49 shots. The 'Cats were just 3 of 13 from the 3-point line and made a season-high 27 free throws going 27 of 35.
Dominique McDonald and Winston Williams each accounted for 14 points to lead Minot State in scoring. Michael Pelo and Chris Davis added 12 and 10 points respectively.
MISU shot 50.8 percent from the field on 32 of 63, going 4 of 14 behind the arc and 13 for 23 at the charity stripe.
Wayne State won the rebounding battle over Minot State 35-23 thanks to eight rebounds by Cornelius and Andersen while Williams grabbed six boards to lead the Beavers.
WSC had 19 turnovers in the game, five more than Minot State. Thomas handed out five of Wayne State's 17 assists in the contest.
Wayne State will host the University of Mary Sunday afternoon in a 3 p.m. NSIC contest in Rice Auditorium.
